Ok, I just wanted to make sure that you were getting a fair opinion on those graphics. People tend to be too nice to the point that some people literally think they're pixel gods and then stop improving. I didn't want you to fall into that trap ![:)](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png)

Oh, well in that case, thanks for looking out lol.

Anyways, for anyone who may still be interested, I made a few more things. I made a new style of building, mostly concrete with brick bottom. It's supposed to look like a ledge is coming out of the top where the concrete and brick meet but I'm not sure if I like how it looks. I also made air control units with control boards, I was aiming for somewhat futuristic, as well as random litter(Litter helps give the feel of chaos?). The theme of this game is/was going to be an alien invasion but with a little twist. The world was going to be mostly modern, like ours, but with a little more hi-tech gadgets and what not so the air duct control units and boards are supposed to help support that idea. To be honest I've kind of been losing interest in this idea so I'm not sure if I'm going to do more work on this or not. I might just start this over and actually take my time to pump out some decent graphics but we'll see.

Anyways, heres the map. I made the map overly trashed… Its everywhere lol.

I know this topic is a bit old but I was just curious, would anyone play a game with graphics like these? If so I may make more but I've lost the tiles I made so I would have to start all over which isn't a big deal since these graphics are pretty easy to make.

As I was reading this:

I was looking at this:

Even with poor/average-looking armature graphics like these, when used with a lot of detail, they look great! Sure, they're simplistic and too-easy-to-make. The important thing is content. If making easy tiles helps you push content of your game forward, DO IT! If adding more lazy graphics to your tilesheets helps your game feel fuller of content, DO IT! I really like the almost-sociological experiment you've proven here. More crappy pixel art > very small amounts of amazing pixel art. With your current method, you'll never feel intimidated in the same way someone creating a single tile that resembles a masterpiece would; you'll never worry about HAVING to follow-up your last work (which would require immense skill) with something better– you can simply just make something BETTER!

So I got bored and decided to work on these tiles some more. Here is a map with some of the new tiles I've been working on, I didn't make the cars I think they came from Earth Bound but I'm not sure on that I found them on the net. Same for the light post. I did however touch them up as well as recolor them to match my tiles.

I managed to find some free time so I decided to try and touch up my tiles. It was said several times that the palette was ugly and the trees needed work so those are what I focused on most. Let me know what think, thanks.

> the sideways cars aren't done from the right angle.

Also, why would you use black outline for flowers, not to talk about trees.

The tree design is so wrong, you cannot even properly shade it, everything on the tree is just wrong.

Keep in mind that it needs to have some logic, because of the source light.

Those leaves doesn't give the feeling that tree is rounded, feels like is just flat, so you won't be able to shade it to look too good.

Never bring the outline inside of another object.

Like you did with the leaves and trunk, branches.

The perspective of the tree is mixed with other 2 perspectives, what is happening in there?!

There are so many things to correct starting from the perspective to design, color palette, shading

All I like are the cars. :P

Hope I wasn't too rough with you :D

Well damn. I don't have much free time to do too many improvements and I personally thought it was a good improvement. I had a pretty difficult time making the tree to be honest. The palette I found by googling snes palettes. The black outline is to make it look cartoon-ish which, apparently, I managed not to do. The cars I took from Earth Bound for place holders but seeing how others have also said that they're the only good things as well then I'll keep em if I keep working on these.

I'm getting the feeling I'm just not cut out for pixel art. Sucks but we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Even if I do give up pixel art I'm still proud of what I have made here and at least I have that.

:P

Okay so I haven't given up just yet. I worked on the trees a bit and I feel like they are much better now. I also added some dirt spots as well as a few different tree trunks/stumps. The next thing I am going to try and tackle is changing the perspective on the cars.

Well, here it is.

I have picked up on these tiles again but I'm going to go with a fantasy theme instead of a sci-fi theme. Heres a preview of what I have done so far, I will most likely start a new topic for this new project.

Mate besides what people are saying I can completely see where you're coming from, I am custom making the Gfx in my project and it's much more motivating to be seeing your progress and project develop.

I like the style I think some of the colours I.e the door and dirt are too similar palettes that just blend together. The trees are a huge improvement and the pattern on the new houses is wicked I love it and it looks medieval.

A few tips would be as you go along and create these custom tiles would be to save the colours and adjacent shades in palettes so that when you make a themed set of tiles it looks much more together and a set when it matches.

Good luck with your game. I think the best way personally to keep creating and making sufficent progress is to map out and know what your creating before you sit down to create basically; plan ahead!

Thanks for the feedback. I have been told from the start that I need to work on the palette so I googled snes palettes and choose one. The reason the dirt and door colors look similar is because I have only used colors on this palette, I haven't tried to add or create new colors for the palette yet which I guess I should do. I'm still somewhat new to pixel art in general. I am still learning and obviously have a lot to figure out still. I kind of think I made a mistake by trying to create my own style instead of try to recreate a style to learn from but I guess its never to late.

Here is the palette I have been using, I thought it was a good one but I'm thinking other wise now:

Not a mistake at all, if you spend your life being spoon fed you will only learn the shape of the spoon. You need to go and test your skills and see where your art takes you! Don't copy, but get ideas of course ! I think the more work the more it'll look more of a style. Good progress man

Okay so it has been awhile since I have made any updates so I thought I would throw one up.

![](http://eclipseorigins.com/community/filehost/208aa45a75074f75f9e35efc790e5cb2.png)

I'm going to change the OP to show my first ever tiles and where they are now just to show how much they have improved(even if they are not that great).

So I have decided to go with a retro style. I have been told by friends that it would look better over all and after testing/tweaking some things I agree with them. Here is a little preview of what I have got done so far.

I remade the cliff tiles and touched up a few things here and there. The sprite and the big tree with leafs were made by Dash(special thanks!). One of these days I may actually get around to making a game with these tiles. It seems I tend to get caught up exploring/making new tiles.
