Over the years I've grown tired of seeing so many games coming out with all the same RMXP/VX graphics. Don't get me wrong, I like RM GFX, but to me it seems using the same graphics as everyone else really just takes the excitement, fun, and uniqueness out of a game. So I have decided to make a game with all original graphics. Everything… Sprites, tiles, spells, items, you name it I'm going to make it, well, except for maybe the GUI I'm not very good at that at all ![](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png).

Anyways, heres a map with what I've made so far. I'm aiming for a very simple simple style this way I won't be very restricted on what I can make. I'm not very good at pixel art so this will be a learning experience for me as well. I'm not going to say what the game is just yet but I will say its not going to have anything to do with Knights or Mages or Middle Earth or anything like that. Please let me know what you think and please don't be to hard on me lol.

I much prefer that sort of graphics than the super detailed (read: pixelated) graphics.

I'm not too keen on the sprite, but the trees and rocks look great. I'm undecided about the flowers.. I'm glad to see you've put a fair amount of effort in though. Good job and keep it up. ![:)](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png)

I like them, they look good, but like Syn said,

The flowers need to be redone, they don't look like flowers. The tree's are good but i think you need to add a sort of "top" to them, like a point almost or something. Add a pine tree looking top to it.

There's very little shading on the trees and any shading there is, is correct for an overhead sun.

I even made an annotated diagram to explain it:

Just to use a real world example, have a look here:

While it's not the best photo', you can see that the outer leaves catch the sun and so are brighter; the leaves closest to the trunk are darker.

Thanks for all the replies so far guys.

@Syn and Cmfiend420 I know what you mean about the flowers but the problem I am having is that with this style there is not much room for detail and any other way I try just looks even more strange. As for the tree tops I completely see what you mean. I'm going to change them up tonight and I'll see what you think then.

@Eckhart I understand what you mean but how else do you suggest I do the shading for the trees? I'm aiming for simple so I felt that the style of shading for the trees worked. Like I said I'm not very good and this is a learning process for me so your info will help me a ton.

Also, to everyone, I learn best by seeing and doing so if you can make some edits for examples that would be even more helpful to me. Anyways, thanks for the nice comments again and I'll post some more screenies later tonight.

Edit: I just saw your pics Eckhart lol. Hmm, I'll see what I can do.

Bump!

I've made some edits and added some building tiles. I'm not sure if I'm going to make the roofs visible or not for sure yet both have they're pro's and con's. Anyways here they are.

Zetasis these look great, I always give my full support to those who actually try to make their own sprites for their game, and I really like what I see. Heres bascially (and when I mean "basically" i mean "basically" because I am terrible at pixel art) what I meant as far as the tree's went. I also tried and idea for the flowers, take it into paint and see what you can do with it, its basically taken what you have grouped it, and somewhat made it more pokemon insipired, but with some work they could look real nice.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to most likely change up my flowers to look like CMFiends as well as the trees but I just wanted to show off an NPC I made for the game. I was trying to get a screen shot off the thing walking but oh well, I'll post one later. I'm still not going to say what the game is about just yet but maybe someone can guess it. Oh, and ignore the name, its just something I came up with real quick.

Alright, so I haven't gotten around to changing up the trees or flowers tiles yet but I will. I've mainly been thinking up enemies for the game and so far I've come up with a few. Heres a preview with all of my tiles and sprites in it. I didn't notice that the Brutes sprite isnt showing all the way but its the same as the warrior just with out the laser sword thing.

The ! above the drones head is indicating that there is a quest to receive from it. Don't worry, there isnt actually a quest ![:)](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png). It is from Robs edit and the NPC already had a quest and I just forgot to delete it. Other then that what do you think? I'm trying t think up some more unique enemies that will fit the theme and when I have more to show off I will. I've just been busy with work the past few days.

Bump!

Okay I didn't much get done tonight but I managed to get a reasonable looking sidewalk done. I've also whipped up a couple cracks as well. I'm considering brightening up my pallet but I'm not sure. I was kind of aiming for a darker game and I think brightening the colors would take away from that. Anyways heres the map now with a sidewalk!
