I have heard about this as well, over 700 people hurt. And they told us we are prepared and ready to spot those. ![:D](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png)

No wonder why some people thought its apocalypse, real one could look like that I guess. Pretty scary.

Meanwhile on the news, they cover an event like this for 40 seconds, then spend 10 minutes talking about whether or not Pres Obama hinted that his daughter might start dating during the state of the union address. Naturally the Pope declared that he wanted to resign earlier this week ![](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png)

Well meteorites aren't really that rare but that is quite a large one, and it seemed to drop near a population center which is statistically the least likely. Pretty cool.

Edit: haha a /pol/ thread about this is labeled "SPACE DECLARES WAR ON RUSSIA!!!"

Edit Edit: oh yes,

BLOWOUT SOON FELLOW STALKER!

Also, it didn't actually impact the Earth, it exploded in the air.

Someone estimated it had an energy release of about half that of the Hiroshima bomb, which is quite small for a meteorite..

Most of the injuries where caused by shattering glass from the shockwave… People saw it streaking across the sky, ran to the windows to see what it was.. Exploding glass in their faces.

"Curiosity killed the cat" has never been more appropriate.

For a meteorite its rather large, being that Earth sees 5-10 of them a year. Also while there was no direct impact, a (small) portion following the blast hit a lake in Chelyabinsk.

The Earth is almost constantly hit by asteroids, but most break up high in the atmosphere. Granted this is the largest one recently, a one about the size of a football pitch also happened to fly pretty close to the Earth a few hours ago, so it's not that big.

Considering it was about 5m across and it caused that damage, it makes you appreciate how much energy they release. Just imagine the one which hit ~65ma (K-T Extinction Event) around Yucatan (Chicxulub, Mexico) which was a little under 200km in diameter.

There are Meteorites, Meteors and Asteroids. If we were hit my Asteroids constantly we would all be dead….

Just fyi, scientistsnever said that. They have made it very clear they can only spot meteors that reach a certain size. Anything below the threshold is undetectable, as this one was.

Asteroids big enough to cause any real damage get detected. Example: Da14 that passed by just hours ago. We've known about it for a year already, even though it's _only_ big enough to take out a city - hardly apocalyptic.

Asteroids can refer to any size, so my point still stands. However, I'll concede that I did mean meteor(ite)s. ![:P](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png)

An asteroid is sometimes called a minor planet or planetoid. They are small Solar System bodies in orbit around the Sun.

They are smaller than planets but larger than meteoroids, meaning that an asteroid can range from a few meters wide to hundreds of km wide.

A meteorite is any object that has entered the atmosphere of another object and survived to impact the surface.

Another way to explain a meteorite is to say that they started out as little chunks of rock and debris in space called meteoroids.

An asteroid is always going to be in space. Once it enters an atmosphere it becomes a meteor, then a meteorite if it hits the ground.

A meteorite is always going to be on the ground.

I heard about this on the radio last night, and saw it on the news this morning,

Also, at about 4:30 this morning, DA14 was supposed to be able to be seen from Australia, but I couldn't see it, I looked for about 10 minutes…
