Solstice
working on the background pic i got bored k. and also keep it in mind that this is only stage 1 and stage 1 alternate (don't really like the first one so i made saved an older version please tell me which you like best), i usually do 4 stages to each of my images, the tiles were for a space game, but now anyone can use them! :icon_music:![](http://burn-blue.com/view/1882/space%20tiles.bmp)REMOVED THEM CUS THEY SUCK :P

Solstice
I am also not very good at large scale gfx, i prefer pixel art tbh.
Solstice
@Chief:> hmm, the shading on the "planet" is really, not good… lolyou try drawing a planet with shading on it in paint, then complain.
Alpha
MS Paint?Get GIMP or Photoshop.Paint is never for producing the real quality pieces, but if you practice enough with pixel art you'll get it.I say 7/10 for the tiles, 4/10 for planets.-Alpha
Solstice
lol 1/10 for your "log" -.- you can't criticise me dude, i too have seen your abominations

zade_o
Wow. God, don't flame someone who's giving you critique on your art.Tbh, I'd give you a 1/10 on them all too because the stars are nothing but a few white pixels on a black background. And w/e the green thing is…. wtf is it? Just seems like random green blobs on a black background. If photoshop is too high tech for you, spend time learning how to use it because it's a hell of a lot better than paint... I was going to add that the stars were just pixels.-Alpha
zade_o
Yeah if you're making something so simple…. I don't think pixel art is the way to go. You should probably do a soft brush on photoshop so it emulates the glow from a star.... 1 pixel just looks boring
Alpha
So.. Something like this? [GIMP-Quick mockup]![](http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt9/Steve_Alpha/th_star.png)Thanks for the suggestion Ghost.-Alpha
zade_o
Naw, hold on I'll make an example.![](http://i44.tinypic.com/2epm4js.jpg)Ok, so basically 2 of the stars are a 2 pixel wide brush on 0% hardness.1 star is 4 pixel and 1 star is 3 pixel. It makes a nice effect for stars in the distance. a lot better than 1 white pixel.

zade_o
I mean I guess. But if you're in photoshop…. just use paint brush instead of pencil and lower the harness to 0%
Alpha
GIMP has the same, except for the harness option.Thanks!-Alpha
edache
God I don't think the image was that bad, I mean you were using paint. =P The shadows were weird but it could have been explained as if that was the planet's texture, not shadows or something… lol. I actually liked its simplicityIf you're in photoshop its even better, make random dots of different sizes (keep them small though), duplicate the layer twice, give both duplicated layers a Gaussian blur, one of the two layers give a big value to the Gaussian blur, the other with a small value, then change the blending mode of both to linear dodge, It gives them a nice glowing effect...Here's a random example I made... I added some color though.![](http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/9181/space2.png)
Alpha
Wow, those look great Edache! Really nice, they look like real stars...Is there any way to do this in GIMP?-Alpha

Alpha
Use a pencil tool to make this? ![](http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/9181/space2.png)I don't think so, it would require quite a few Gaussian blurs and other glow effects.-Alpha
