Welcome back! Glad you were able to get through all of that stuff and excited to hear you want to help new members.

Locked, this thread is way too old for any more discussion.

I imagine it would be extremely hard to find a specific tile and the file would be absolutely massive. Although I don't really see it impacting performance too much it would be a serious annoyance when mapping.

The key is really practice. My maps used to look just like yours, although I'm not amazing I'm getting better every time I practice. Also look at this topic for a few examples of some really amazing maps. These'll help you get better if you look at the techniques the creators used. http://www.freemmorpgmaker.com/thread-85605.html

My personal favorite has to be Spider Dance from Undertale. If you've yet to play it the entire soundtrack is fantastic. https://youtu.be/7WDFUcjWARU

Well I've weighed all of my options and Game Maker seems to be the best fit more me. I'm only interested in making 2D games and can't afford other engines such as Unity. Thanks for your help everyone. :)

@'Exception': > Undertale was made with Game Maker. > > At its core, Undertale is a pretty simple game that simply stores a lot of detail about what the player has done. Overall, I wouldn't think too hard about what to use and just get on with picking and getting something done. I do plan on starting to learn an engine tonight. So far GameMaker appears to be my best bet and what I'm leaning towards. @'Mohenjo: > Maybe try Duality? Google works wonders lol, if you find an engine you like, feel free to share it with us :D Wave engine might be good too? Not looking very far into these, just naming a couple Thanks for the suggestions! I'll check both of them out. :)

Thank you for the suggestions! I see you've both suggested GameMaker. Although I've heard of it I hear most people say it's a bit outdated and difficult to use. Any idea if that is the case? If not it does look pretty appealing.

What will make a game unique, and make players want to play it?
Colonello replied to Sekiguchi Okitsugu's topic in Q & A
My main suggestion would be not to use default graphics. Get custom icons and map tiles, etc. Nobody wants to play game with graphics they've seen a thousand times before. My second suggestion would be to add in custom features. Eclipse SkyWyre is already a great engine on it's own but unless you hire a programmer or program your own features in, it'll be just like every other project. For example maybe hire someone to add in cutscenes, cool armor animations, etc. But since you're new I'd hold off on this for a while. Don't spend money until you know you're serious about this project. Your game can still be fun without custom features. -
Hey everyone, I'm currently on the search for the best engine that would suit my needs. Currently I know a decent chunk of Java and I hear it's easy to transition to C# so engines that use either of those would be nice. Preferably I'd like it to either be free or below $100 as well. Anyway I'd like to make 2D Undertale-esque game (if you've yet to play it it's similar to traditional RPG games). If possible I'd like to be able to release it to more platforms than just Windows (but this is not necessary). Thanks for your help in advance! :)

This is an extremely interesting concept! If you're able to accomplish this all in Eclipse it'll be very impressive. I don't think a game concept like this has really been done before, at least in an MMO.

The sprite isn't coming up because your numbering is probably wrong. You need to go from 1 all the way to whatever the last sprite you have is. You can't skip any numbers so check to make sure you aren't missing one.

I love the look of isometric art. If you manage to make an isometric game in Eclipse that would be really impressive! :)
-
Wow this looks great! I'll have to give it a shot later. :)

I love seeing these updates. The game keeps getting better and better. :)

Awesome tutorial. :) More layers are a blessing in eclipse engines. Anything more complex than a map you'd see in the original Final Fantasies and Pokemon GBA games will typically need more than just 2 or 3 layers.

These look so great! Really love voxel art. :)

Wow, this was an extremely interested read and also gave quite a good history of that part of Eclipse and it's engines/games. :) Glad you posted this!

Looking even better :)

Very very cool looking! I'll have to give this a try later. :)
