To my dismay.

I received interesting news today. The kind that would be devastating or extremely woot!!. So here's some back story.

As some of you may know I am not the most visually capable person. Or to be more blunt, I R Blind. Since I live in the stares I am entitled a government stipend which helps me survive in this work oriented world. Right now I get about 600$ which isn't too bad at all.

Now to the news.

Last week or so I received a call from my dad. He told me that my SSI case had come up for review and that he was looking into it. If this review goes poorly(ie: they prove I'm not blind by some miracle, not likely I might add.) I can lose my check completely and be forced into homelessness and begging for a job I might not be capable of doing to a full extent. Another thing that he brought up was that according to them I am still a child, and that is why I haven't been receiving the full amount that I should. If we can prove that I am blind(lol), can show that I have no assets, am not employed, and am not being taken care of by someone else(which I'm not) then I could receive a lump sum payment for what they owe me from the past two years, (up to 14,400$) plus having my check raised up to twice as much as it was. (max 1200$)

Not that this really matters to anyone but me, but I thought you guys might have an opinion or a comment about it.

If you need any help, I have a pencil with your eye's name on it. <3

Hope you get the money. Get everything you can from the Government. I've just been filling in a shit-load of paperwork for my Dad to get all the benefits he's owed by having me live with him. Hopefully he should be getting backpay for the last 2 months, which could come up to £800 or so, and then ~£100 a week.

Marsh, I mentioned this when you were high. :D I just get close the screen. Text to speech/magnifier programs are a pain in the ass.

Robin, good luck man. It always feels good to make the government(no matter you country) work for you.

Anna, More so because I live 100+ miles from my dad. he had to call me to do the paperwork with me. Plus I have to have a phone meeting Monday, while they wait for the paperwork he'll mail in on Monday?!? lol.

Also to clerify some, When I say blind I mean legally.

According to US law if you have vision lower than 20/250(bigger denominator) Then you are classified as legally blind and therefore are eligible for SSI(The check as I call it).

I have 20/400-500( Need to see a specialist to get the exact number, but they're an hour away) and absolutely nothing in the other eye. I'm pretty sure I have the right to call myself blind here. :D

Actually I have considered that. The thing is that the surgery that could help me is 50/50\. I'm sure you can see why I wouldn't take the chance. On a lighter note, I'm used to being blind, I don't know if I could handle seeing perfectly. I mean learning to drive, and being expected to do so much that I am not used to, it's almost as bad as being sighted and going blind in some ways. :D

/facepalm, damn you Re-captcha. Anyways, all kidding aside, I hope this review meeting goes well tomorrow. I feel bad for you guys if I end up working at Burger King. I have to have one of my room mates check to make sure my meat is cooked all the way when I do make dinner, so that should say a lot.

Ah man that's harsh… I actually make pretty bitchin' food. J/K I don't care. I doubt it'll go bad. It's the other part that hs me bothered. I mean I don't think the government is just going to hand me 14k even if they owe me it from the past two years. :D Especially since they're trying to kick me from the system and I've been in it since I was about 4, so yeah pretty fudged up stuff.

@Robin:

DAMNIT I was going to say that. Well I shotgun the left eye.

But yeah serious man, everybody has their price and that's definitely some nice money. I hope you get the money too. It's great that your coping with it, I know someone in real life who has a similar problem, and she copes well too. As far as I know she isn't on the check though, she actually works two part time jobs.

I know a lot of people who end up getting good jobs despite their vision being poor, but in the area I live I won't find anything, with trying. I live in a small college town with about 8000 people, a dead economy, and everybody and their grandma trying to find work. I'm sure you can see where my odds stack up.

On the update side, I spoke to a guy from the determination office today, and he said that they needed some paperwork from the doctor I saw last. I'm not sure how complex the situation is, but from the sound of what my dad told me today, I need to shove a foot of some of the local level workers' asses. ^_^. I'll let you guys know how it goes, I don't see them pulling any thing out that I don't have paperwork for.

Lastly, Kreator, where is your friend from? If she lives in the states she should look into this program. It's based on vision level, economic status, and one or two other things, but you have to apply to get it.
