Ninjas were not hired killers. Ninjas began with people who didn't want a samurai to 'test the sharpness of their blade' or some other such unfairness, and instead would kick them in the shins and hide.
This evolved to running UP to them, kicking their shins and hiding.
Shortly thereafter, things evolved to running up and BREAKING their shins. Curb stomping them was considered good form as a follow up.
Eventually, in an attempt to be truly badass, they decided to see if they could break samurai shins and curb stomp them all without being seen. Lo and behold, they did.
Contrary to popular belief, they didn't exist mainly as hired killers. They were people, people who were very very good at defending their land, sometimes preemptively. That's not saying that they never hired themselves out, but when they did the price was, as mentioned above, steep.

Pirates, on the other hand, played a really terrible round of cards, and got to choose between having their balls chopped off to pay their debts or join the crew. Many wound up wishing they'd picked the ball-chopping. It's a known fact that strange illnesses are bred on boats of all men that are at sea for months with no women on board (it baffles science, we are aware). Many a pirate was left in writhing pain as his testes shriveled to resemble a pair of sun-parched raisins. The one thing they could console themselves with is that they now could sing exceptionally high. This in turn gave rise to Pirate songs.

So which is it: Badass villagers who beat the living shite out of anyone who threatens them (Oh wait, that's the scottish too..) Or 'curious' men plagued by halitosis, bad teeth and debt?

I know my answer. Have fun on the boat, and don't drop the soap. Oh wait, they didn't have any.

Other than that, the other 99% of the ninja activity in the world consists of anime fans and silly videos. Take ninja's large amount of Google hits, for example. You have to admit, at least several million of those hits are probably from things like [this](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEtIoGQxqQs) or [this](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP8O_GfPpGI). In fact, the top Google hit (besides Wikipedia) was this [half-assed "Official Ninja" website](http://www.realultimatepower.net/index4.htm). Scrolling down a bit beyond that, I see more Youtube videos with millions of hits from "fake" ninjas acting silly on the web.

Do the same search with the word "Pirate". First, you'll get tons of hits for piracy, which lives on in the form of sailing the seven seas of the interweb. Yarr! The next hit (again, besides Wikipedia) is a site containing information and essays about the history of pirates. And you guys call pirates stupid? You might have more Google hits, but what those hits consist of is what really counts. A million stupidities is no match for one stroke of genius.

Tragic, really) but the point of this is to match up classical ninjas against classical pirates, and get people's opinions.
