  1. Growlith my default for storing the library files is System32, should I switch to SysWOW6? Also do I need to download a complete copy of vb6 as well? If it helps I'm trying to run Eclipse Mega, but I think it's install should be the same as EA.
  2. Specs: windows 7 64 bit I can run the server but when I run the client I get an error message that says "can't start because dx8vb.dll is missing from your computer" If this is direct x 8 I might be in trouble as I heard windows 7 64 bit can't run dx8.
  3. Yeah it's as he said unfortunately^^^ I found though that I have been able to keep all of the eclipse files on a flashdrive and in the past I was able to run eclipse at school off of a fdrive. I couldn't install anything at school either, so I forget if I was able to install library files. Anyway I know there's a way to run the old eclipses off of flash drives. Oh and Kinjiru nice RUFIO!!!!! It's quite Bang-a-rang!
  4. My system setup is the same (windows 7 64 bit) and I have also been getting this error with some versions of eclipse. After the server starts up fine I run the client and have been getting an error that says "can't start because dx8vb.dll is missing". I've heard that some versions of eclipse run partially off of direct x 8 but I have also heard that dx8 is unavailable for windows 7 64 bit. Hmm, hoping I can resolve this issue in windows 7, or I may have to install windows xp aswell.
  5. Yeah I'm in a similar boat. I haven't used eclipse in ages and have come back to start a project. I used to know a little bit of visual basic's programming, but that was also a long time ago..
  6. Very nice, the customization that would come with a changeable wardrobe would be a nice addition to the game.
  7. Yeah the trunks either need to be thinned or the trees need to be expanded. Or perhaps a mixture of both!

    A Tileset

Heh, yeah I certainly like the old pallets shrubbery and grass more than the new one. I think the buildings tones could be softened a bit ;)
  9. Check out Guild Wars 2 It's not out yet but when it is, ounce you buy the game you can play as long as you like, no monthly fees. The trailer is here: www.guildwars2.com
  10. I tried this a bit over a year ago and it's a grindfest. Although the graphics are decent I'd get Guild Wars 2 when it comes out, it looks awesome. Buy the game and then play it as long as you want for free ^^
  11. The number one most important thing a game has to have is: The game's setting needs to be superbly done. The game world has to be original and imaginative yet also be believable at the same time. I hate how almost every single fantasy book or game is almost all unoriginal, borrowed content. When I play a good game (and these are rare) I need to feel like I am completely immersed in a different world. It is even better when I am playing as something other than a human or in the very least a human under special or interesting circumstances. Customization in both character abilities/career and choices are very important. A great game should not be played to simply: level up, get new gear, and in general become more powerful. I've played quite a few grinding games (I must shamefully admit I played Maple story once upon a time, though fortunately saw the trend after a time and left.) which may have be somewhat fun for awhile, but the novelty always wears off. There's no point of becoming powerful in a game when the horizon of exploration does not open up and become more rewarding. Whats the point of becoming more powerful in a grinding game? Besides higher numbers on the player, monster/opponents part and flasher skills there really is no difference from the start to the end of the game. A truly good game will do things not seen in other games. That will likely be under professions, or many small different ways of doing a game. These types of breakthrough's have been seen when implemented for the first time as: player houses, or a player morality based off of in game decisions. I'm really tired now and so I will finish this post tomorrow. It is likly the most important question that can be asked on this site and deserves a lengthy and proper response. -I vote to sticky this too, it is too important a question not to do so.
  12. You might want to start of with one race. In my game I'm starting of with humans and then adding playable and non playable races later on. I would make at least 2 classes for each race. I will likely have at least two races (one at first) and at least three classes for each race. I am probably making different variants of my races. Do all people look the same? No! There's Africans, Asians, Caucasians, Mexicans, and so much more. For creature races I will likely have noticeable differences in stature, color and general skills and interests.
  13. In my Game I will likely have instanced apartments and houses. Entry to your house will be granted by typing in a code which the player has created plus a number code which is assigned. (This way other players can't simply guess other players codes.) It would be great if guilds own their own buildings or part of buildings. They could even rent out rooms or buildings from other players, guilds, or simply from the server. Heh, A cool feature to add is a watchdog. If a player enters in the password for a apartment or house number wrong three times the watchdog of that house or apartment would attack the would be intruder. More powerful watch animals would obviously cost more to buy. (and possibly upkeep.) And don't say this is a Necro people, I know it's a little old. I've had this discussion before on the game design feature and for the most part it has been ruled ok to post on older topics in boards that apply to aspects of a games actual design or theory of design, for although a post may be old any new information regarding the topic is encouraged for it takes a fair amount of time for someone to make their game, and they can benifit from new knowledge on older topics.
  14. Thats true, one could keep guessing and get into random peoples houses. perhaps a simple code system to get into your house would be good. One that uses numbers or better still numbers and letters that do not relate in any way to the map number assigned to them.
  15. Yeah, for sure its very similar to doom. Provided the actions fun it could be an an action packed Doomish rpg. It would be very important to make intresting or scary looking monsters. (who wants to go on a pink bunny shooting rampage?) well maybe me heh but it wouldn't be a scary game.
  16. I think a 1/10's a bit harsh. Yes his grammer wan't perfect but we need to look at the essence of his story. I do like the idea of these superbeings that have been created artificially being pitted against living mortals. I think you should give more explanation on why killing the living fuels the departed. If your stuck you can use magic to fill in provided it fits and dosn't go against anything. It may be good to provide a bit more depth in the motives of the departed so that it dosn't end up as a mindless zombie killin game. Perhaps you could make a leader of the departed or perhaps a twisted warlok like character. You will always be carfully evaluated and likly harshly critized if your games based off science, even if you are right people will disagree. Try magic with of course carfull consideration. You don't want to use magic to explain everything away for then the story has no solid grounding. Believe it or not ive been around here for quite awhile, although I don't post much. (I just changed my post name from Xolani to Tolth) What ive seen is that it is much easier to use cold hard reasoning to tear new people to shreds than it is to be the bigger man (or women heh). This means that even if the new guy is rude when you give him help (try to be friendly! It would grow the community so much for people are attracted more to forums if everyone is being cordial in thier posts) as the more knowledgeable and experienced eclipser persist in being polite to him. It will make him look worse than any amount of flaming will do if he continues to be a dick while you are nice to him, but more importantly it's just the right thing to do. So im not pointing fingers but giving all of you (and me for I often need it) a friendly reminder about how to treat people.
  17. Awesome idea! Alot of mmo's out there use an "invite a friend" system that rewards the user with extra ingame time if they can get friends to join. This way is good because it encourages people to try your game whereas other games reward the inviter but the friend who starts the game still pays full. In a free mmo players have nothing to lose and much to gain by this system. I would advise you not to make the reward ingame money for this is inviting abuse. people could make many alt character accounts to reward themselves. Also even if it was unabused it would throw off the in game economy. Even if it was a little bit, many factors can lead to a grossly unbalanced game economy and thus the game will be ruined. Perhaps you should make the reward "fashion" items that could not be sold for money or traded but could be worn by the benifiting user.
  18. The scripted apartments idea is a good one. I have been considering the same for my game and have conluded that a code would be appropriate. A player would go into say a housing complex that is communal (meaning it's open to everyone) then they would go up to the right door and type in thier code to unlock it. Upon typing in thier code and entering they will be warped to the map which (hopfully for conveniece sake) corresponds to thier code. ex: code 128 warps player to map 128\. This is alright becuase it allows trusted friends to also go to the house provided they know the code.
  19. Firstly if you are basing your game of the Arthurian legends you must decide how closely are you going to follow what supposedly happened. If you do follow closly all you need to do is research what main fighting units were used at the time and there you have your classes. You may wan't to add a bit of personal flare to the legend by creating your own classes, but if you do this make sure they "fit" the backdrop and are appropriate. ex: no stormtroopers in an Arthurian legend.
  20. It's your first map so of course it's going to be a bit tough on the eyes, hey everyone's gota start somewhere huh? I would try to make things that appear in nature such as streams less square looking and more roundish. For trees and plants never put them in an easily recognizable pattern such as strait lines of trees in a forest. However this could occur if beings have altered nature for example if trees were planted along a road. Don't get dishartened and keep practising.
  21. Even If the last post was what about a month ago, Rathalos is asking advice on bosses presumably for his game. The significence of this is - games usually take a long time to make so i dought our frined Rathalos has finished his game, or even finished all his bosses for it. Therefor one needs to look critically at the context of a post before on can condem the poster as necroing.

    Tool Bars

Yor reasoning behind it sounds solid and many people including me would be more than happy to have a toolbar for action commands in our eclipse games. You could use coding simuler to when you memorize a spell then press a button to activate it, except you would be memorizing to keys like 1-9.
  23. Remember to make not all your bosses big guys with tons of hp because from a player standpoint this get tiring and boring when overused. Give him special abilities that make combat interesting to say the least
  24. It shouldn't be to complicated if you have a at least a basic knowledge of vb. I made a rpg for a programming project and after using eclipse to make the maps I made a simple turn based combat battle system. It's pretty simple to make the gui for it, one needs to make sure the equations used for combat are spot on though. For a 2d game with graphics simular to eclipse many people often prefere a 2d turn based game versus a 2d realtime action game. Anyway a bit of vb study will not be wasteed if you change your mind because im sure you will need it later if you want to add a bit of "uniqueness" to your game. good luck - cheers!
  25. It may be a good idea to add some personal things to zelda to make your game "special" when compared to the many previose ones. When making a game based off a popular one it's a good idea to add a little personal flare whithout going to over the top as to change the original concept.
