BMP doesn't support transparency so just make your tilesets background pink and the engine will remove the pink for you. Also, use [Paint.NET](http://www.dotpdn.com/files/Paint.NET.3.5.8.Install.zip) instead of Paint.

I'm thinking of learning to create an app and have some questions: Can you create an app just using C++ and SDL or do you need special software like this? Is SDL a graphics development kit the same as Dark GDK? What's the difference between Visual C++ 2008 Express and IDEs such as codeblocks?

The way to do it would be to load the maps around the one you are currently on so it creates the illusion of one big map. This is probably a very hard programming task though.
