death
I can only think of one option. But it could damage your computer. Turn it off by the swich.WARNING: It can damage your computer! Use as a last resort!

Fruitpunch
@Marsh:> hold the power button? i turn my computer off like this every day.my bro screwed his up like that. So I prefer to use the shutdown method. My computer is top of the line and I prefer to keep it that way.

jna
I use the power button sometimes when its frozen. Nothing ever happened to it. And sometime the light goes out so ya…
Hippoman789
lol you have it easy. to turn my ON i have to unplug, wait, once it flashes and hums for a second plug back in.when it freezes i just hold the button or take out the plug.
Admiral Refuge
I usually just flip my switch my computer is plugged into…Either that, or just unplug the computer itself; been doing it for 15 years, on multiple computers, and nothing has ever happened ;)

Guest
Turning it off with the power button should barely ever damage the machine, the reason it takes up to 5 seconds to shut down is because its making sure all of your hard memory and system memory are not storing cache data which could screw things up when you power it on later. Your brothers machine probably screwed up because his machine was either faulty anyway or doing too much processing stuff when the power button was held. Zawk
click run type in "sfc /scannow"its suppose to scan your computer for errors and those that it returns such as dll files etc… it will fix, note it will probably ask for windows cd... this command runs on windows xp systems, not sure about vista. Also the tool is built in so its legit and also... if this doesnt fix your problem try disabling Nvidia Display Driver Service as it is a lead factor in most shut down problems, it isnt essential to have it running in the services and your system will function normal without it being enabled. trust me :)btw thats if you have a geforce graphics card..only disable AFTER running the scanning command above.if none of it helps you can try typing in "powercfg /hibernate on"this is for vista and what it does is enable hibernate mode and allows you to select it in power options, some people has reported this as a fix to problems like yours.still doesnt work? reinstall video drivers can fix the problem too :)
