  1. The answer is pretty easy: specialized tools always have their niche. Look at RPG Maker. :) But it has to be just that, specialized. A general framework like Mavra 2D is unlikely to ever be used since you're right… other great "general purpose' tools already exist. Eclipse is popular because it's not general purpose, it has a narrow scope of allowing people to create an online game. If Mavra is to suceed, it has to have a killer feature that existing engines don't have.
  2. It's just a chunked data structure using spatial partioning to narrow the scope. Probably a quadtree.
  3. Pro Tip: This could be the greatest thing since sliced bread but your grammar and spelling is going to make people think twice.

Note: Don't use this to enforce a ban. The client can spoof this info.
  5. * Don't send anything sensitive like a password over the wire in plaintext. Use encryption and public-private keys. Hash passwords before being sent. * Use one-time passwords and two-factor authentication to make man-in-middle and replay attacks useless. * Enforce reasonable password strength limitiations. * Prevent brute force login attempts; lock out users who try and send too many invalid requests (similar to forum software) * Authentcate all incoming traffic
  6. Hi Eclipse! Some of you may know about my project **OpenORPG and what I'm trying to do. **For those of you who do not know, let me just quote the Github page to get you up to speed. > OpenORPG > > OpenORPG is an online roleplaying game engine that runs on the web. It uses open-source tools to help developers create their own net dream on the internet and share with other players with little to no hassle. OpenORPG takes a modern approach to develop accessible games ready for the web. > > > > Client > > * A web based client means your players will be accessible: Facebook, the web, a desktop client, mobile. If you build it, you can reach them. > * Built entirely in TypeScript and based on the ever growing and popular Phaser, the client has access to amazing tools developed by something of the best growing open-source projects. > * Use HTMl and CSS to design and create good-looking UIs – no need to worry about propietary UI systems > * Updates are instant – using the HTTP protocol, you don't need to worry about it. > > Server > > * **Speed**. We've built this server to be fast and modular. We want everyone to be able to develop on the lowest possible specifications we can. With growing technology, this has become possible with modern languages such as C#. > * **Accessible**. We've made sure setup is easy and painless. Get started with little scaffolding and dive right into developing a great game. > * **Object oriented**! In a world like today, what else would you expect, right? Want to learn more about OpenORPG? Check out these links: * [The OpenORPG website](http://www.openorpg.com/) * [OpenORPG on GitHub](https://github.com/hilts-vaughan/OpenORPG) With that out of the way, lets cut to the chase. This is a massive task and blogging, setting up forums, planning product roadmaps and getting feedback from all different developers is just too much work, for a single guy. This is where you come in. You're an energetic individual wanting to change the landscape of how future generations can create their own net dream on the web. You get excited about playing with the ORPG scene and want to help move it forward. You will be the life of a new project, the face of a new engine. The **Community Manager **position is a job that entails: * Preparing blog posts and writing news about what is coming up, keeping everyone up to date * Setting up and maintaining forum discussion boards, taking feedback * Performing queries on existing developers on what tools they need to great something awesome * Help craft and develop product roadmaps so we can realize a great engine * Additional responsibilities as required as we grow Sound like something you would love to do? Send Vaughan a PM on Eclipse or an e-mail at vaughan [at] openorpg.com

Hi, I encourage you to star the repository and let the GitHub news feed do the talking. :) I'm certain progress will inspire plenty of confidence. Feel free to check out the GitHub commit history previously to see how much work went into it.
  8. I've added some repository info and blog stuff to the main post so others can check out progress and get a better idea of how real this is. :)
  9. > Incredibly interested, can't contribute much with my limited knowledge, but I will be eager to see how this developes. Thanks! Please do keep an eye out. Any type of support is appreciated. :)
  10. [OpenORPG Blog](http://www.openorpg.com/) | [OpenORPG ](https://github.com/hilts-vaughan/OpenORPG)[Repository](https://github.com/hilts-vaughan/OpenORPG) If you're looking for a game that has been well formed, defined and ready to go.. then this thread isn't for you. I'm sorry to have wasted your time. **But!** **If you're interested in a project that is being built from the ground up on open source technology to test the demands and abilities of it, this might just be the place for you. ** Project Liberation is… _Project Liberation is a project designed to test the scope of OpenORPG and prove the viability by implementing a full game on the technology. It is designed to be a flagship title that runs the bleeding edge software and lead the way for other developers to believe in the technology._ _It is designed to be a fairly basic online game that combines classic gameplay elements into the browser to create a compelling virtual world to test the bounds. Project Liberation will go beyond being a simple sample game included in the source code, though. Project Liberation will be a full game that is playable, maintained and hopefully able to thrive on its own. This is a necessary step to prove the viability of a technology. _ Project Liberation is an open source project that hopes to bring a great browser based game on technology I've been developing. However, I am no game developer so I'm looking for a team that is willing to work with me to really flesh out this technology. **I have presented a possible game-play scenario below, but the liberation project really could be *ANYTHING*** In the terms of an overview: > Project Liberation is based on a dystopian world in which adventurers are born into. Here, humans have gained the ability to use basic magic to make their lives easier. This is a world with no conflict among the citizens and crime is a low threat due to the heavy monitoring of magic that occurs within the bounds of the village. > > > > However, magic is not always so innocent that it would only be used to help clean your home, water the plants or make dinner. While children are taught the presumptions origins of their magic, the elders of the country know the real truth. Humans have a much more powerful capability latent within them. All it takes is liberation. > > > > Players will play as adults grown into a small village who will be sent to a temple, per graduation rites, at the beginning of their journey where they will slowly begin to learn the truth about their magic by mistake. In other words, I want to work with you to move the community forward. I want to embrace free, open source work that anyone can use to develop their own game. And to do it, I need a game to work towards to make a robust engine. After all, **make games, not engines. ** So, if you are… * A software developer (programmer) * A graphics designer * Musician * Game Designer * Level designer * Writer * … or any other creative field! And you want to do any of the following… * Contribute to the scene in a friendly, open way * Develop a cool, modern game * Expand your portfolio on open work that will always be available (don't need to worry about the work disappearing!) * Hone your skills on a project Then, we should get in touch! This will be a creative project and I would like to get everyone who expresses interest involved in the project in some way. **This will be a creative process. **Those who are apt in game design are especially encouraged to contribute, having well defined requirements will really help. You can check out some random technology related screenshots below: ![](https://i.imgur.com/dwYdT7w.gif) ![](http://www.openorpg.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Haruhi-720x340.png) ![](http://www.openorpg.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/SnakeSpawn-520x245.png) ![](http://openorpg.com/tooltip.gif) **Please send me a private message or leave a post if you're interested.**

Yes, your site is going to be disappearing within days now. :) Your new leader cares nothing about you. They have shut it down due to a rebellion.

I highly encourage the community to rebel before your new found dictator over-runs you all. :)
  13. Hi Incompl, Unfortunately, that's an issue with your DNS. I'd advise flushing your cache and trying again.
  14. @Growlith I can assure you things are very much legitimate - feel free to read the terms and conditions and legal bindings associated and review our website @ axonify.com I'd be glad to clear up any doubts. If you have any direct questions, refer to our Twitter or the support e-mail. (You can also contact me directly via my Axonify e-mail if you send me a PM).
  15. @Vus Feel free to build a game and have a trusted guardian register on your behalf. :)
  16. I encourage you to re-read my sentence - and you'll realize you don't relinquish ANY rights unless you win. You quoted it yourself. :)
  17. @Frankenstein Please acknowledge that you're entering a contest from another company - and we're essentially crowd sourcing our development. We're asking you to build a small game that is simple - and not typical of consumer facing games. Since we intend to fully make use of the winning submissions - this is necessary. Sorry if this doesn't sit well with you!
  18. Hello everyone! _Build a game. If it's awesome, you could win $5,000._ I'm an employee from Axonify dropping by to let you guys know about an awesome competition we're holding. We're a startup corporate eLearning company that specializes in making corporate training fun - through gamification we drive retention to the masses. For the next two months, we're holding a competition for developers to submit small browser games that can be played in short sessions that deliver meaningful training content. There's an example video and more details on the site - which you can check out at [http://games.axonify.com/](http://games.axonify.com/) I'd like to stress that if you're in the market for building HTML5 or DOM based games and want to win some extra money - you've got nothing to lose. If you don't win a prize sum, you retain rights to your game fully. This is great opportunity to submit small games you may have made with Construct 2, Game Maker HTML5 or other tools, as well. As long as they implement our API and follow the guidelines - you're set! If you have any questions - please don't hesitate to leave a post or check out the contact address on the web page. Have an excellent day! We're looking forward to cool submissions from all the Eclipse people! /endplug
  19. If it's just a development box (and not a serious game server) and you just need something to run your game for a while, feel free to just install a desktop window manager and a copy of WINE. I can atest it runs fine under WINE. Some people will flame me out for this, but there's no reason that if the Linux VPS is what's in your budget that you can't do that.
  20. > Player Starts Moving (or Changes Direction) > Sends packet to Server with Direction and Speed, The server sends that packet to the map. Each client on the map, then loops through the player array, finds someone who's flagged as moving, and moves them on their screen, rather than receiving the X/Y position from the server every time someone moves. It's a shame that alone is awful and will cause clipping and all sorts of discrepancy between clients. You'll need some extrapolation / interpolation, dead reckoning and a good prediction algorithm on the side. =) Oh, and a fixed Hz timestep sending periodic waypoints for movement couldn't hurt, either.
  21. > didn't say 4D graphics ![:P](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons//tongue.png) I meant just another way, like the tile based games are something between 2D and 3D, what about a stereoscopic game with some new kind of "joysticks"? I've seen on discovery science something like a hamster ball where you entered, and the direction you were going, the in game player was going too. And something new, that'll put you more info The game., Idk what, but we have the technology, all we need is ideas, and someone to make them real. http://swordartonline.wikia.com/wiki/FullDive
  22. Silverdale is still looking for developers! Now that development has really begun to amp up we could really use the extra help! ![](http://i.imgur.com/deE1E.png) ![](http://i.imgur.com/omNFq.png)
  23. Except his is client-side, so I don't think he quite wins. A quick little hack will knock that to shreds.
