Specifically the feet don't look like feet because it looks like an extra toe is sticking out the bottom of his foot. I realize you wanted to make the feet at an angle so it's probably best if you make the feet a little round shaped (like most sprites have them).

Upper body looks good. The shading on the shorts looks off, and the feet definitely look weird.

The edges of the road looks unnatural. I agree with vitin change the color palette to the cliffs. Other than that everything looks good.

I agree with Tora it depends on the person. Personally I would probably plan out the Major details then leave the rest to be improvised. Plan or no plan I don't think it greatly effects the making of a proper game.
