Hardly. If you learn the programming side of the engine first you'll be able to understand the actual features and systems a _lot_ better.

I'm not expecting him to learn it in one day. It takes a long time. It was at least one month before I even started to write my own code at all ;D

if your serious about game development, youd be applying for a job with professionals, not downloading freeware engines

my suggestion would be to figure out what do you want to do with the program, are you interested in getting a team together, figure out roles amongst each other and work on a game together?
or do you want to join another persons team and help make a game with them
either way, your going to need to find out what your interested in:
music
graphics
programming
scripting
mapping
there are a lot of different things you can do, but your going to need to figure out for yourself what your most suited for
