@Gwendalin:

> I like pantera… where does that land?

Pantera lands in the realm of legendary Heavy Metal, and happens to be one of my 4 fav bands. Don't listen to these infidels if they say differently.

Primal Concrete Sledge FTW.

RIP Dimebag.

"Thrash"? What the fuck?

The second music debate start picking apart OPINIONS due to stupid sub-genre labels is the second everyone involved in them need to stage dive into a crowd of hungry zombies.

Person: Hey you like _musical genre_?
Other: Oh yeah, I really like _specific band_!
Person: Oh please, _specific band_ isn't real _musical genre_! It's obviously _inane sub-genre_, obviously inferior to the purity of the genre!

This is how stupid and opinionated you people sound half the time.

I only recognize 8 different genres of heavy metal.

Thrash(Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, etc.)
Classic(Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, etc.)
Death(Death, Morbid Angel, At the Gates, etc.)
Black(Dimmu Borgir, Celtic Frost, Samael, etc.)
Power(Hammerfall, Dragonforce, Symphony X, etc.)
Gothic(Sentenced, Paradise Lost, Anathema, etc.)
Doom(Funeral, Solstice, Earth, etc.)
Mainstream(Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Godsmack, etc.)

Also to Bone: Kreator is godly there easily my favorite thrash band followed by slayer

Sounds like a pretty inane list of sub genres. Also I'd probably take the "classic" genre out, since Zep and AC/DC are older than metal, sure they may have aspects of early metal and some inspiration, but they are not contemporary to metal. Iron Maiden really is contemporary to Slayer and Metallica, although the styles aren't exactly the same (I like Iron Maiden's ballad style of music).

Breaking down metal so much is sort of funny considering they are all deriviatives of rock anyway.

@Gwendalin:

> which is a deriviative of jazz

Although rock obviously does have a lot of influence from jazz, especially the early Presley era, but rock also has influence and roots from folk and country as well, so it isn't necessarily a derivation of jazz itself. It's a modern amalgam of music.

Fruit punch, I set my friends on fire is not a metal band :S. they are screamo. and i really don't think screamo and metal go in the same category at all. sure there can be screaming but same time they couldn't.

Iron maiden
Darkest Hour
Arsonist get all the girls
Light this city
Bring me the horizon

I listen to a lot of deathmetal anymore.

Metalcore, deathcore and death metal FTW.

And Anna not sure why you think subgenres are inane, pretty biased and stupid opinion. Without subgenres, I'd never be able to label what types of metal I like, and it also helps me find them. Not to mention, you don't understand the theory behind them. It's not like they just go 'Ok lets call this subgenre' AWESOME metal. For example-

Completely agree with you Anna. Kreator, if the genre's help you sort your collections easier, then kudos, is suppose thats one advantage for them, but I dont see many others - lo its a complete joke now TBH… i mean look at this fruitpunch guy... he said  he recognises:

> Thrash(Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, etc.)
> Classic(Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, etc.)
> Death(Death, Morbid Angel, At the Gates, etc.)

That list there makes me want to reach through my computer, grab his head and smash it forth many times, making it bleed profusely (no offense fruityman)

Metallica .. Thrash?…. Iron Maiden.. Classic?

oh man I gotta stop this post before I go postal.

I'm not really into metal. It's not so much that I'm biased; just that generally it's really loud and I've got pretty sensitive ears. I do love the great guitar work in metal, it's pretty amazing how good they can sound and the speed at which they can play.

Makes no sense. If music is loud then turn the volume down. How can music itself be loud? Seriously I don't understand it when people say that about metal.
