Anna Comnena
Sounds like a pretty inane list of sub genres. Also I'd probably take the "classic" genre out, since Zep and AC/DC are older than metal, sure they may have aspects of early metal and some inspiration, but they are not contemporary to metal. Iron Maiden really is contemporary to Slayer and Metallica, although the styles aren't exactly the same (I like Iron Maiden's ballad style of music).Breaking down metal so much is sort of funny considering they are all deriviatives of rock anyway. Anna Comnena
@Gwendalin:> which is a deriviative of jazzAlthough rock obviously does have a lot of influence from jazz, especially the early Presley era, but rock also has influence and roots from folk and country as well, so it isn't necessarily a derivation of jazz itself. It's a modern amalgam of music.

Dark Crusade
Metalcore, deathcore and death metal FTW.And Anna not sure why you think subgenres are inane, pretty biased and stupid opinion. Without subgenres, I'd never be able to label what types of metal I like, and it also helps me find them. Not to mention, you don't understand the theory behind them. It's not like they just go 'Ok lets call this subgenre' AWESOME metal. For example-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_metal
Anna Comnena
Yeah but people who have tastes outside the genres get scoffed at for mislabelling bands and songs as in the larger umbrella genre, as if it's a capital crime. Music elitists are worse than wine connoisseurs.Sure, it's a pet peeve of mine, and I decided to rant about it today.

Kreator, if the genre's help you sort your collections easier, then kudos, is suppose thats one advantage for them, but I dont see many others - lo its a complete joke now TBH… i mean look at this fruitpunch guy... he said he recognises:> Thrash(Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, etc.)> Classic(Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, etc.)> Death(Death, Morbid Angel, At the Gates, etc.)> Black(Dimmu Borgir, Celtic Frost, Samael, etc.)> Power(Hammerfall, Dragonforce, Symphony X, etc.)> Gothic(Sentenced, Paradise Lost, Anathema, etc.)> Doom(Funeral, Solstice, Earth, etc.)> Mainstream(Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Godsmack, etc.)That list there makes me want to reach through my computer, grab his head and smash it forth many times, making it bleed profusely (no offense fruityman)Metallica .. Dark Crusade
Hah, yes I have to agree with you there though. xDApart from sub genres usually helping me get an idea of whether or not I may like it (when given by a reliable source), theres not much else about the 'sub genres' I really could care about. kerii
I'm not really into metal. It's not so much that I'm biased; just that generally it's really loud and I've got pretty sensitive ears. I do love the great guitar work in metal, it's pretty amazing how good they can sound and the speed at which they can play.
