I actually think there are some good individual mechanics in that game.

Namely having the music change when a player walks over a tile in a certain direction. I've found I need to make a new map whenever I want the music to change, not a big problem, but it limits the feeling of being in a large open-world.

Also, during the kraken encounter he applies bleed to the monster. Status affects are cool.
