You don't have to be a devout atheist to have seperation of church and state. You just can't allow pure religious doctrine to base public policy on. Most don't, because the general idea behind America was that everyone has their own beliefs and values, and the state should take a minimal attitude to allow tolerance and liberalism to foster (I say liberalism in the classical sense, not the diet-socialist intolerant rhetoric "liberalism" is today).

Ehhh, Bush and Reagan seemed like huge stretches in that article.  It's one thing to say God spoke to you and another to say God supports you, the latter meaning they are using religion to boost polls and not because they actually believe God had them in this grand design.  The rest are just your typical religious nuts.
