Hidden NPCs

Okay.
for awhile now ive been coming up with monster ideas and what not.

what i need is a script that has the npc to wait in one spot until the player comes in a certian range of tiles
and then the npc moves toward the player to attack it.
but if that player moves out of the certain range then the npc will stop in its tracks and just stay there

yeah but not exactly how i saw it.

it be like this

say your walking along a path and there is a patch of grass (thats pretty big) thats right in the middle of the path.
you think nothing of it
so you walked right up to it and the spider pounces out and attacks you
and poisons you.

thats pretty much how i want it
