New2Eclipse
i simply don't want to waste my time (possibly months) mapping this game to find it lags, I guess I shall just test it often…..
Robin
@New2Eclipse:> i simply don't want to waste my time (possibly months) mapping this game to find it lags, I guess I shall just test it often…..EE2.7 and ES both have problems with their systems which will cause lag no matter how many maps you have. New2Eclipse
how many maps can I have, approximately, without it being unplayable?
Anna Comnena
Depends on how your maps are designed. Probably the tens of thousands though if they are all "normal" (20x15 tiles) sized maps.
Draken
well CoI has 1500 maps thats 30x30 and it had no lag when it was online. or was it 2500 something like that
Kite
According to HM, 10k maps would be about 90mb of ram used.Thats scrolling of course.
Robin
It seems everyone else has got a different definition of lag to me. XD
New2Eclipse
So i guess that means i could easily run 500-600 scrolling maps without too much lag
Robin
@New2Eclipse:> So i guess that means i could easily run 500-600 scrolling maps without too much lagMap processing is only done when players are on the map. Having 500 maps is a _lot_ different from having 500 maps with people playing on them.
Homicidal Monkey
@Kite:> According to HM, 10k maps would be about 90mb of ram used.> Thats scrolling of course.also I might want to point out that VB6 can only allocate a total of **256mb** for data types. That limits maps to about 25k. Of course it depends really on the number of people on a map. It actually uses less power to have 1 person on 5 maps than to have 5 people on 1 map. So it might be worth making it so that people can reserve hunting grounds for their party/guild.
Kite
What eclipse game will ever have more than 10-20+ people though :PI might just stick with 10k maps 5 k per root town. But yeah, I have had 5 people on mine, and it ran fine no lag.

If you end up gettting a game that popular though, I guess you could just translate it to Origins when Robins gets the translator working.
