No, it doesn't. You probably did something wrong.
PNG and BMP are almost the same. The difference is PNG have Alpha Channel.
If you save the image from PNG to 24-Bit BMP, you'll be fine.

If you still want to use PNG in your game, you'll have to convert from Dx7 to Dx8, which is a lot of work, don't even ask how. You need to learn VB6 and DirectX8 yourself.

Is it the convert PNG to BMP then create a surface with it?
It's not really efficient though, I would just stick with BMP.

It's ok that you lose the transparency. The client will take the color of the top left most pixel in your sprite & render that transparent ingame. If white won't work for you then use paint to recolor the background.
