(so a desert can slowly become a snowly location as its overtaken by a different biome-type over a long period of time?) - going across zones? I assume if you want changing maps you are going to want them randomly generated at start. Then you can move into making the tiles gradually change depending on some sort of algorithm such as desert melts snow snow covers grass grass grows onto desert. But its very possible.
