Na, it's not sourced.  I've done it before, you just (as you said) use the image for a ground tile, and set the rest of as mask (has the rm2k effect).

kk well u know how its black in the tilesheet background well.. How do i make it so that the black stuff wont cover the ground wen i use mask?? Is it possible (:
