The solution I would use, would be giving the mage a very low physical strength and defense, this way they have that advantage of blocking themselves (though, if the NPCs are set to "attack on sight", even more npcs will be charging at the mage), they would have a disadvantage on the end that they wouldn't be able to melee.  After all, isn't that what the mage is for anyway?

Remember, people might not want to port their whole games to java, they might keep VB. ;)
