This is kinda built-in already; it's not animated, but if you look at the Sprites.bmp (and the second-half of the paperdoll sheet), you'll see the player is in sets of three frames.

The first two frames, are the frames that rotate when the player is walking, and the 3rd frame is reserved for the player's attack; just make the 3rd frame for the sword int he paperdoll sheet be swinging.

You only have the flash on the 3rd frame, right?  Not in the first two?

Have you installed that "True 3-frame movement" thing in the source Tutorials board?  That may have caused the problem.
