First Steps in Pixel "Art"

So, I never really pixelled before.
My actual project certainly forces me to make own graphics, because, you know, custom is always better. So, here is my first try:

What do you think?

Pixel Art

I suggest starting off with Art, then move onto Pixel.

What I mean is Sketch it using shades, don't work off of outlines. They will subtly add restrictions to your art. Use the darker mid tone, and paint a silhouette of a guy, from there. go to the next brightest shade and paint on shape definition. NOW move a little closer to the pixel level, where you'll add muscle shapes and definition.

Google is your friend. Look up anatomy, see how the body is actually shaped. No offence but I'm unsure if your human as of the moment.

Not always the case, I always saw it as just a different way to pixel. No way is the absolute way or the right way imo. An outline could be a great guideline especially to someone new who can have trouble envisioning the end result.
As for the picture the light source is inconsistent with the shading. The anatomy is off which ruins everything else. Work on the anatomy using outlines or shading blobs, whatever you feel comfortable with. The colors you chose for shading look off. There are a couple tutorials out there (use google) that talk about color pallets and hue shifting which help things blend together I would suggest reading up on those. Most importantly continue pixeling, practice makes you better over time.

But techniques separate the good and the great

If you can't envision your art.. then what are you doing making art.

Thanks for your enormous replies. o.o At first I didn't get what you wanted from me, Ict. But then I saw your Tut and I can say, I don't like that style. No offence. I am on Foggers point. Practice makes me better over time. :D

I suggest you remove the mouth move the eyes 1 pixel down remove the space between the arms and move the left leg one pixel to the right and the right leg one pixel to the left.I cant do anything by just looking but it should make it look a little batter oh yeah and move the head one pixel down. And its good for first try :]

Edit:Nvm the body shape is wrong

The good thing about pixel art and art in general is that there are a multitude of techniques to make something look great (different types of shading, color palettes etc..)
It is why you see a variety of styles in pixel art

And it's not that they can't envision the end result, its just a bit harder for someone starting off.

The anatomy is better than the first but still looks far off. The legs are shorter than the arms which makes it look unusual. Also the space in between the arms and the body makes it look bad. Either expand the body so the shoulders don't look unusual for the body size or place the arms by his side so the green in between doesn't show.

Please don't edit things if you're just going to make them worse.

If anything, you should increase the size of the limbs, ~~and just remove the shading in general and work on it after you've got the line art.~~ (ict said not too lol) The arms are sticking out way too much, you should make them more relaxed. Hands and feet are not required if you can leave them out in a decent way. He's got a flat top, and he's also flat looking in general.

Also, you seem to have two pixels as the middle of your sprite, but put one pixel dots for some features like the belly button. A few things are too far to the right, also.
