  1. > Well it sucks seeing all these members who, I feel, have had a great impact on Eclipse leaving/quitting. I just don't understand whats happening. Back in the days of EE it seemed the site was much more… together, if that is the word I can use. Even though we all had a shitty engine to use and most of us were using RMXP graphics and we all mainly focused on scripting it seemed, to me at least, that we were all friendly, helpful, and happy members. It's strange to say but I kind of feel like it is our own egos that have brought this place down. Over the years we, or alot of us, have grown to be programmers and pixel artist and along with our skills have also grown very arrogant which has lead us to where we are now. I do often hear members complimenting the work of others but I also see, almost more often, members trying to simply take other members down a peg when it is highly unnecessary.

    I gotta fucking bump this.

I TOLD Yukiro that promoting Colgate as the new official Eclipse toothpaste brand was a bad idea! Now I lose Crest :C

I do hate to see you go :C
  3. If you actually have the programming ability to fix the upgrade errors from VB6 to .Net XXXX (I think it is 2005 with the upgrade tool which is ironically a decade old now.) you would understand why it is better to write from scratch. 1 or 2 years after gaining that knowledge you would learn why you shouldn't do it in VB.Net.

    Best of Luck,

  4. Just kinda following Matt's post. I've made it clear in Skype but I am going to make it official here too.

In the next few days Yukiro will take over the Eclipse site and servers fully. When that happens my job will be done and I will be removing my own admin access. I am honestly very skeptical about the future of the site, but I wish you all the best of luck.

  5. Okay, this is my own personal vision, feel free to modify as required.

Basically, each topic is assigned to one user, this is how I feel like it should be organized.

Start out with the name. Link to the profile in case of name changes.

  6. First off, I would like to point out the potential trolling of the backwards Wing Lee username.

That aside I feel like this is just fancy concept art, not an actual program. I would love to be proven wrong though, any chance of a demo?
  7. Yukiro,

This is something that started as a PM to you, but I think it would be really good for everyone to read. Others can comment on my thoughts and point out places where I may sound biased or otherwise unreasonable.

Sometime next week, my job handling the transition should be done. I will hang around but I don't plan to operate at any administrative capacity. With that said, I would like to take a moment and share my thoughts/feelings specifically about the growth of the forum, overall happiness, and even about banning troublesome members.

Let me preface this short rant by paraphrasing what you said a few days ago. He said something to the effect of "By the end of 2015 I want to have a significant number of members to match the overwhelming amount of guests on the site." (I know that is incorrect, I am going off of memory but the point is the same.)

In order to achieve this goal - to even get close -  you want to keep as many old members interested/active while encouraging new members to join the site, ask questions, and contribute to the community.

Those are facts. Now here are my concerns.

I've been told by 4 members of the past/current staff that they fear for the well being of the site. They are legitimately afraid that in an effort to keep everyone happy you have a good chance in destroying it once and for all.

The biggest thing that I want to mention is banning:

Putting events in chronological order you asked us in the group Skype chat what we thought about unbanning everyone. There was an overwhelming number of comments against the idea but it seems that it has happened anyways. So now it's done, and hasn't been too bad so far. The problem is that in 2-3 months, more than half of them will be banned yet again.

Amish was bad and good when it came to banning. He gave just about everyone second chances upon request but had a low tolerance for putting up with crap. At the same time he noticed a few simple facts. When it comes to _people_ everyone has potential. Any newb can be the head developer of the engine(s) in a few years. Something that really needs to be considered is how many new members does a veteran have to insult/encourage to leave before they are not worth keeping around. Do we ban someone after they scare off 5 newbies? 10? How many of those were going to learn how to program, or become graphic design prodigies and literally have the course of their life changed because of Eclipse? This needs to be thought about in the upcoming rules and dealing with trolls in the near and distant future.

I will admit when I am wrong. There are several members who were banned, once, twice, etc who i never thought would be beneficial for the community. I will admit I was wrong in multiple cases such as with John and Budweiser they have been fine since being unbanned by Amish. I will also admit when I am right, when Thomas/Deathbeam gets banned for the 14th time I will let out a small chuckle with no surprise in the slightest.

So here are my suggestions take them as you will:

In the past, we have generally made admin zone topics when people were banned talking about why they were banned and with comments/pictures/other evidence of offences for future reference. That way if a ban was unreasonable it could be revisited, discussed and potentially lifted. I made the banned section so people could make claims as to why they should be unbanned so they didn't have to make new accounts and clutter the forums. I think that recording should be required on all bans so unfair ones can be lifted and second chance decisions can be educated decisions. I suggest you make a child board in the admin zone for bans alone, and make 1 topic for each person and update it every time they are banned or they break a rule just for referencing. (I also think that this board should only be visible to the higher level admins for less leak potential.)

Furthermore, I would recommend removing shoutbox access or making a secondary shoutbox to those who are notorious for abusing noobs, so that when you start your advertising campaign it isn't thwarted by veterans looking for a laugh.

Finally, I think you, Yukiro, should take more counsel from your most experienced admins (Agoraphobic, Matt, Azkanan) they have been through everything including Marsh's ownership and Amish's they will give you some of the best advice when it comes to any forum matter.

I really do care about this site and I have made some great friends here. I only wish for the best I hope that is something you can provide.

    Goodluck and Merry Christmas,

    JC
  8. I personally like it because it makes cross platform deployment easy. They handle the graphics engine, sound engine and scripting engine so you can focus on game development instead of compatibility issues.

With that said, you lose control over certain features they don't give access to. For example 2d lighting effects in my current project were more complicated to program than it should have been.

You don't have access to low level code, if there is a problem you have to wait for Unity to fix it, Seth mentioned GUI bugs yesterday with his multiple monitors. Either way, I find it fun. Highly recommended.
  9. Approved and set his new account to banned.

Based off of the email address he wasn't trying to "sneak" back in.
  10. People have tried to create Pokemon games with Eclipse for the past 10+ years. The problem is, by the time they actually have the skill to do it, they have moved on and no projects are ever completed. Yes, it is possible but it would require someone to program everything beforehand which simply isn't going to happen.
