how exactly do you pick up items? i made gold the currency for my game, and when a monster drops gold, it wont let me pick it up for some reason. Is there a certain key i must press?

I am new to Eclipse, and I noticed that when you equip and item such as a weapon or armor, it doesnt show up on your sprite. Is there a way to have it appear on your character? maybe through scripting? I am not exactly good at scripting, so if someone could help that would be awesome! Thanks
