  1. + 1 Reputation if you can remember watching The Legend of Zelda TV show and the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, Atari 2800 (28 series launched in early 80s, 26 series in the 70s but that predates me), the launch of the NES, Virtual Boy (a bit later in the years) and the ever wicked Commodore 64!
  2. Oh the popup windows haven't even been modified for a proper UI yet, it's merely the backend functionality of the system that I'm displaying, it's in no way comparable to a finished product.

Full screen isn't a bad idea, but wouldn't be the feel I'm going for (more of a "Desktop Adventures" sort of game)
  3. OWe are not always bright lol my best call so far was a call to a church for a seizure, we went into the wrong part of the church and ended up crashing a wedding just as the bride was walking down the isle…...oops

my apologies for bad spelling and grammer, posting this from an iphone
  4. Yes, I spent 15 grand in students loans and two years of schooling to be an ambulance driver…......I'm a paramedic lol ;)

Edit; ambulance driver is a stigma we are trying to break away from.  Ten years ago, sure.  Up here a paramedic would be similar to say a mobile nurse except we follow strict medical protocols and can identify and treat (iv's etc) with tons of medication that would normally be given in the er by a doc. It's a fun but dirty job lol
  5. My inspiration for the plot came from the realization that the Internet is oversaturated with half assed 2d games with ripped off sprites and copyright infringement.  No offense to anyone, using tiles from exisiting games just makes a product seem "amature"

That being said the goal was to make fun of Its own genre while coming at it from a gamers perspective.  Let's face it, humour sells so as long as players can laugh at the material and take it with a grain of salt.

There is still lots to be done but I will keep everyone in the loop
  6. Below is just a partial copy from the Game Design Document, with some snippets cut out for Intellectual Property reasons.  Enjoy.

    **Storyboard in Text:**
Upon account creation it plays a short whimsicle tune and video explaining how you had gotten drunk one night, watched p*rn, mistakenly clicked on a pop-up link, passed out and somehow ended up inside of a 2D ORPG.

The 'ultimate' goal of the player is to get out of the ORPG.  While NPCs will offer quests, your character will deal with continual inner monologue of hillarious quotes such as "I know I was drunk, but this is ridiculous", "Yesterday I was 5 foot 7, now I'm 30 pixels.  Damn", female players "These pixels make my boobs look square", male players "Sprites can still shag, right?"

Players will start by waking up, washed up on a beach with the "Narrator" explaining controls and various functions to the player.  The player will also 'argue' with the Narrator in various scenes.

For alpha-beta testing, players will cap at level 20.

    **Target Audience:**
Young Adults / Teens / Adults
Place warning for vulgar language, sexual innuendos and alcohol at the launch screen.
Include in Terms of Service agreement that parental supervision may be advised and that it is recommended for an 18+ audience.

    **Custom Feature Development:**
1\. Friend / Who Online System to use a UI to view all the players online.
2\. Guild System with a guild leveling system.
3\. Party System with custom party UI
4\. Quest System (Kill NPC, Obtain Object, Interact with Object and Talk to NPC variables)
    5\. Weather System
    6\. Day/Night System
    7\. Player Achievements

    **Custom (Contract) Graphic Development:**
-Graphics will have a whimsicle, anime style.
30 sprites (15 male, 15 female) - used as Players and NPCs
30 monsters (bats, rats, snakes, slimes etc)
    4 Town Tilesets
    20 Guildings
    1 Beach Tileset
    2 Forest Tilesets

    **Custom (Contract) Sound Development:**
-Sound will have a whimsicle, cartoon style.
    4 Town MIDIs
    3 Battle MIDIs
    2 Forest MIDIs
    1 Beach MIDI
    1 Menu MIDI

    **Estimated Budget:**
Original estimates were 500-600USD for graphics and 100-200USD for sound, more accurate estimates based on quotes from 2 contract artists put graphic cost around 1000USD and around 200USD for sound.

    **Outside Resources:**
    1 Sprite Artist
    1 Tile Artist
    1 Sound Technician
    1 Web Developer
3-5 User Administrators once a Public Beta begins
5-10 Trainers once a Public Beta begins

    **Estimated Milestone Schedule:**
1\. Friend / Who Online System - Completed
    2\. Guild System - Completed
3\. Party System with custom party UI  - Estimated finish date of  January 26th, 2010
4\. Quest System - Estimated finish date of January 24th, 2010
    5\. Weather System - Completed
    6\. Day/Night System - Estimated finish date of  January 25th, 2010
7\. Player Achievements - Estimated finish date of  January 30th, 2010
8\. The world map and UI will depend on graphic artists timeline.
9\. Quest Creation Completion (100-150 quests for levels 1-20) - Estimated finish date of February 27th, 2010
10\. Draft Terms of Service and pass it to advisor for legal review

    **Handling Terms of Service Violations:**
For player to player offenses, players will be encouraged to use the ingame ignore feature.

Otherwise for public chat channel offenses, the following apply:

For minor offenses, give Administrators a method to 'silence' players for a specific amount of time.  Create a 'sticky notes' section in the Administrator Console for each player to track a players silence record and have Admins leave reasons as to why a player is silenced.  Also give Admins a Boot and Ban method.

The plan is to create a small piece of code that will generate a random ClientID for each installation so that Administrators will be able to lock a ClientID from connecting.  Will also allow banning by IP Address and MAC Address.  Look into methods of banning IP Schema (first 2 sets of numbers in the IP Address) for serious offenses.

    **Trainer and User Administrator System:**
True to all Samu Games products, we will offer yet again a Trainer and User Admin system.  Trainers will be 'New Player Helpers' with the ability to see new accounts created, warp to their position, provide them with basic support and instructions.

Admins will maintain the policing role, answer player complaints using a custom built 'queue' system for player petitions.  Also add in Global and Super Administrator roles to be described later.
  7. In order to make the system a bit more mainstream, I've added a 'target' window in the top left
that displays your current target's name and their health.

Also finished the guild chat which now shows as default green.  All in all, modifications to the client/server are coming along smoothly.
  8. Hey everyone, I've decided to release the introduction text (this scrolls on the screen - think Star Wars) prior to creating a new account.

You can follow the progress of the engine tweaks at http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/smf/index.php/topic,67928.0.html

    Hope you enjoy!

    **Prologue**

You're a typical gamer.  You eat, sleep, go to work, drink, fornicate and play video games.  Life is good.

It's a typical Friday night.  Your raid is now over, you're drunk as a skunk and you've decided the only thing left to finish the night, is good old fashioned free internet p*rn, you know, without all of those annoying pop ups.

It's going well, you've found a lot of videos that tickle your fancy. Aside from seeing doubles, and having a hard time controlling your mouse, it's going relatively well.

    "Sh*t!"

A Popup! Don't click it…Damn.  You might be drunk, but you're positive you now have a virus.  Popups immediately appear all over your screen, thousands of them. "Son of a b*tch..." you have impecible speech when you are drunk. "Not again..."

*hic*...too drunk!  At this point, it's safe to assume you've passed out.  One tequila too many.

Your head is foggy and still spinning.  "What the hell?"

Looking around, you have no idea where you are.  You were pretty sure you passed out looking at p*rn, but somehow you're outside in a thick woods.  In your underwear.

"You're awake! Good!"  A strange voice resonates throughout the forest.

"Who said that?" Still confused, but now less dizzy.

"I'm the Narrator." the voice said.

A giant blue bubble appears above your head, spanning a good four or five feet, you're not really sure, but you think you may be hallucinating. Inside the bubble, the words 'Welcome Adventurer...!' glisten with a white hue.

    **"Ah Balls.  Not another MMORPG."**
  9. I spent the last 45 minutes or so getting the basics in for a guild system.

At the moment you can use /createguild or use the UI to create a guild (costs 10,000 Gold).  You can then use the "Guild" window to see who's all online, promote/demote/dismiss players.  Right now, it's nothing more than a glorified array of players, there is a guild.dat file which houses NumGuilds = X, and then GuildX.dat represents the data for each guild such as who the guild leader is, and the rank of each member (to a maximum of 30 members).

The goal is to have a guild 'perk' system which will allow guilds to have perks like faster leveling for it's members etc. (Horray for mimicking already successful ideas)

    Screenshot!
  10. Attached is a new screenshot showing the new 'Chat' window.
Alpha Blending is a tedious pain in the arse from my experience, though I'm sure it could easily be done.  To replicate the effect and not decrease performance, I've created a walk around by putting the txtChat on a new form, that new form (border style none) moves into the proper position on frmMain resize, so it always keeps the chat in the proper position.  It uses windows API for setlayeredwindowattributes to make the whole form just a little transparent giving it a nice professional feel.

Note, this means it'll only operate on Windows XP or newer, so sadly, it renders my program moot for anyone on older operating systems, which, in 2011, I pray to god people are atleast on XP.

  11. **Greetings**

Samu Games is looking for aspiring 'indies' to get involved with the development of our latest product, an unannounced online role-playing game.  Without going into a lot of detail early as to what we're creating, it's time to start putting feelers out to find a good pixel artist.

We currently have the 'following' positions available:

    **Pixel Artist (1)**
    _Salary Negotiable (pay-per-tile/pay-per-sheet)_
The successful applicant will receive @samugames.com and @rpg-game-name-here email addresses for work purposes, as well as credit within the product for work provided, (on-top of the mutually agreed upon price for art provided)

    **Requirements:**
-Ability to create visually appealing professional 2d Pixel art of a whimsicle nature. (Think, cartoon style or anime tiles and sprites).
-Ability to work with tight deadlines.
    -Attention to detail.
-Signing a 'non-disclosure agreement' to not release any information about the product to 3rd parties or individuals.
-Signing a 'release of media' agreement providing exclusive rights to created media to Samu Games.

All inqueries or applicants can contact us via "Private Messages" on the forums, or by contacting [email protected] with a link to your portfolio or samples of your work.

    **Who we are:**
Now based out of Nova Scotia, Canada; Samu Games has developed two successful online games in the last 15 years, with it's flagship title Artifact still available for players.  With two (2)  projects planned  (revisions to Artifact 2.x as well as an unannounced online role-playing game) 2011 promises to be an eventful year for Samu Games.

There are two (2) of us involved in Samu Games, myself, owner and project lead/game designer, and Richard (partner), who does day-to-day management of our product(s) and customer service. Applicants will deal with myself in regards to the unannounced online role-playing game.

We've tested several engines for our unannounced role playing game over the last three (3) months, including vbGORE, TrueVision3D, MiniNEAB, however none have seemed to over the robust customization that EO offers (with minimal effort) - we're all about being efficent and not having to create something that already exists.
  12. What happens is that you have the numbers inside of the imgHP picture box,
Do the following, set the labels inside lblHP and lblHP to Alignment 'center'.

Then, in the HandlePlayerHP function in modHandleData,

    Add

      frmMain.lblHP.width = frmMain.picHPBar.width

    AFTER where it says frmMain.picHPBar.width = Int(((GetPlayerVital(MyIndex, Vitals.HP) / HPBar_Width) / (GetPlayerMaxVital(MyIndex, Vitals.HP) / HPBar_Width)) * HPBar_Width)

Then do the same for lblMP in HandlePlayerMP :)  Basically you want to set the lblHP and lblMP width to the width of the picture boxes whenever the size of the picture is changed.
