I'm not 100% sure if I'm an intermediate programmer, a couple more experienced people who I've shown my code(mostly game related) to lately told me that it looked alright or they only pointed out one or two errors, but I'll post anyways.
I started out with MSDN and some random tutorials to guide me through C# and XNA, but after a while I met John(rose) who told me to go learn java or duck myself. I learnt some java using tutorials and other basic stuff, and then John basically just tutored me. Since I was already relatively proficient in C#, learning the basics of java wasn't hard. Now I'm playing around with it and mostly just googling things I don't know how to do and then asking someone(john, westin, support forum) why my code doesn't work/how I should do something. Honestly I think I would've preferred to learn from a good series of tutorials, but I heard that thenewboston was bad and I couldn't find any other tutorials, so I had to improvise. -
> I'm going to bump this, Murdoc and myself have been working on the site on and off but it really isn't our niche. If you are interested you can PM me with a small portfolio showing off what you are capable of, i would say to PM Murdoc but I'm not certain about how fast he will be able to check/respond to it.

Are you talking about .png overlays? If so, I strongly disagree. While it's a nice touch, It honestly doesn't add much to the map. Often it looks ugly, also. It's much more important to have a good map structure and have a good looking map than having a little shadow under the trees and having the lamps light up. -
> Quest For The Crown is still the best browser RPG out there.
oh lord. -
> The rules aren't very accomodating for all tile-sets. Mine for example is reminisent and inspired from titles like Dragon Quest where the inside-view of houses are always shown. Hopefully it applies nonetheless, else I guess I'm out for this contest, which would be a shame.

By the positive comments this map is getting, I'm assuming that by village you really mean any form of settlement? -
> Exactly.

> If your going to do that, you might as well use the tiles like everyone else here does. Why limit yourself for things like fringe, for something thats not anymore legal. Screenshots or tiles, both are illegal. Are you every going to get sued? no. will you get a letter to shut down ur progress? no. (unless u get like 10k users which wont happen)

> Giving a link is pretty useless without any information on the project. Site is pretty bad too, especially how it's half aligned to the left.
Also, it's in turkish. -
> Ah ok. What are you guys actually working on this time? Do you have any actual screenshots to show?
Also, I'm working on this: [http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/index.php?/topic/130151-retro-pixel-art-take-2/#entry861767](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/index.php?/topic/130151-retro-pixel-art-take-2/#entry861767)
Granted I'm not an actual pixel artist, but I feel like these are good enough to be used in an indie game. These aren't for Asran, our pixel artist actually just made some [dope graphics](http://i.imgur.com/yvqWI.png) for asran.

Just to make sure it's clear, this does not mean you have the job. It means that you will be considered. -

Redid grass and edited trees, now it's less retro but I think it still works. Thoughts? -
> I'll fill in your Designer's position.
Sorry mate, we already found a great designer. I'll tell you if it opens up, though. -
You can't use their graphics unless you publish it using RPG maker. That said, no one here minds.

> It sucks.
yup. Mixing anime with photos doesn't work. Not sure what you were going for. -
> Why would you want UDP? UDP is more for p2p type of networking. TCP is more trustworthy, and managing packets would become a much bigger mess in my opinion.

> I think anyone who wants to improve the core engine and not add more features would be a good replacement, but good luck to whoever wants to take Jscinder's place.
If UDP worked, then it would be faster, wouldn't it? Granted it requires more code and is probably more complicated. -
Congratulations! best of luck, hope everything goes well.

Jungle, I use to have a similar mindset to you: If you don't bring something new and radical to the table with your game, don't make it at all. However, after a few months of coming up with crazy ideas, I realized a few things. First and foremost, making games is fun and a great learning experience. Even if it's essentially a clone of another game, you still learn a lot and it's very rewarding. Then there's the slight changes you make to the game, even if it's very similar to another game it is still different in a few ways, and often these ways are significant enough to be worth it. Also, sorry if I'm going out of line, but it seems like your tone is a bit caustic.
That said, Antho3000, your game is kind of lackluster and seems cluttered with silly ideas. Sure, vehicles and mounts may seem like a good idea on the surface, but often they will seem like they were just tacked onto the game. Make sure you make them useful but not overpowered. The same goes for Harvesting. A good example of a poorly done harvest/craft system is skyrim: you click to get minerals, you click to make items. There is no skill, no thought… just a cold calculation to see what will get you the most money the fastest. There isn't really any luck in it, either(though often luck can be annoying). Fable II had a slightly better system that incorporated a mini game to jobs. Even better than that is minecraft, where you have a fun and engaging crafting system. Haven and Hearth gets buy with such a simple crafting system because crafting is such a huge part, everyone has to do it. In skyrim, crafting just seems like an after thought.
**tl;dr**: if you add a feature, do it right. -
> Why is my package blue? :/
Have you bruised it? -
> The trees look too flat and side-scroller-ey. You need to give them top-down perspective.
I'll think about it, but most of the old games, and even some new ones, that had fir trees had them like that.

We're still potentially looking for a concept artist, however we do not need more pixel artists or graphic designers.

Wow, coming[cumming] from you, that means a lot! -

Why do you guys keep asking dumb questions? Can't you stay on topic?
> Could it be a rhetorical question?
Huh, why didn't I think of that? -
> And yet they don't. Well I could do it but it would still involve some networking - not a whole lot but some and it kind of defeats the purpose of the single player engine.
Do you think they will try and make their game unique if there's a single player engine? I think it'd just end up with a shit ton of games saying that they are unique because they have mining, or because they have a cool storyline, or because they have different graphics. -
I don't think it's really necessary, but obviously we'll all say that it'd be nice. Make one if you want to, but I feel that Eclipse will always be MMO oriented, and a Single player engine may just dilute the community.

> I was half joking. I really like LUA for those reasons but it isn't as powerful as I'd like it to be. Hell, it doesn't even have a switch statement or structures.
I hear Lua is a decent scripting language. I think it's an alright first language. I don't actually have first hand experience with it, but I imagine it's very similar to python.

When he said java was better, it was a personal preference issue and he told me so. He didn't actually have a problem with me using C# or anything, it was just that I would be working with him more and he liked java so he told me to use it.
