  1. > We actually only perceive 2 dimensions, we have the ability to detect 3D objects through the means of lighting. Your brain uses 2D images from the eyes to create a illusion of 3D objects.

    (dictionary.com)

    **per·ceive**

[[/font]per-seev] [Show IPA](Show IPA) **_verb (used with object),_** **per·ceived,** **per·ceiv·ing.** **1.** to become aware of, know, or identify by means of the senses

Going by this definition, we do perceive distance. Sure, you perceive it after you have transfered the information as a 2d image to your brain, but you still perceive it. You also perceive time.

This still needs more contrast. Right now, if you just squint your eyes a little it becomes uniform in color.

[This](http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/shtml/tutmini-grass.shtml) is a decent tutorial, although I don't like the color or the finished product. It has the technique alright.
  3. First off, the fourth dimension is ambiguous. It can be either the [fourth spatial dimension](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-dimensional_space) or [time](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacetime), both are accepted ideas. Let's talk about time as the fourth dimension first.

    > I don't think your brain would be capable of processing information from the 4th dimension.

    > Note that it remarks that, "[background=rgb(255, 255, 239)]We live in a world of three dimensions. Well, we only perceive three dimensions."[/background]

Assuming we accept that the fourth dimension marks the passage of time, I say that we do perceive it. I remember what happened ten minutes ago. People perceive time, and know how long ago something happened just as they know what lies three feet in front of them.

Now a quick comment about the fourth spatial dimension. It is a dimension that we cannot see. You cannot actually imagine it, as you have no idea what it would look like. It is also very theoretical. In my opinion, it's kind of like parallel universes, only the universes aren't actually parallel(meaning they aren't the same as each other but with only a small change), and instead you can see across multiple ones. [Here](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDaKzQNlMFw) is a nice video on the fourth spatial dimension. [Additional source/information on fourth spatial dimension](http://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/everyday-myths/see-the-fourth-dimension.htm)

I don't think that this should be a debate really, it's kind of more like a discussion. A debate would imply that there are conflicting opinions that have valid points, but this is more like an attempt to figure out what the fourth dimension really is(and plenty of scientists with fancy doctorates have already done/tried to do that).
  4. > it maybe bright but for a first attempt he/she did well.

Doesn't matter if it's the first or the hundredth. Give honest advice and try and help people get better. Settling for mediocrity will get you nowhere in life.
  5. I vote magical fantasy MMORPG dragon online. MFMDO. Try and make your name as generic as possible so more people will think they like it.

Seriously though, those names are some of the worst possible names. Go with something unique, that actually has something to do with your game. Then again, "guild wars" and "world of warcraft" were hits and their names were shit. They had millions of dollars, so I guess that must help.
  6. > @lttyBitties… why are you writing on every post shading bad bla bla bla... please do it better if you can
    >
    > PS. ive seen your sprites... (Too dark,,, too small not real looking no shading)

The points are valid, that's all that matters.

That said, Fuu is one of the better pixel artists on this forum, his sprites are some of the best I've seen here.
  7. > The game takes place somewhere in the North American Stone Age when the nomads first arrived.

duck yeah, that's one of the coolest time periods. Will there be mammoths? Dire wolves? Giant sloths, maybe? Sabertooth cats, even?

I can't wait for this. I loved haven and hearth, and it seems like this will be similar but with an even better setting.
  8. > Really? I don't even.. You know what? I'll just face palm for you. Yes, it's certainly feasible for a person to fumble through their pack while being attacked; I'd limit this to people who accept that they're going to die anyway.

The thing is, if combat is a state that's judged by whether or not there are enemies aggro'd and nearby then you can be in combat but safely behind a rock or whatever so you can drink that potion. Of course, if you get hit in the face with a broadsword there's about zero chance you'll be able to finish drinking that potion.

Maybe you could have it so whenever you get hit you stop drinking your potion.
  9. > the whole artistic feel takes away from all of that.

Do you mean the graphics or the story?

If you mean graphics, then I'd like to point out that my favorite graphics are from Final Fantasy tactics. Call it nostalgia, but I honestly think the game is beautiful.

Best of luck on this game, I loved tactics and hope this can give some of its feel to the MMORPG scene.
  10. > Helmsglade

That's probably one of the most generic, cliche fantasy names I've ever heard. That said, I think it could work with Elandor because it's trying to be a bit nostalgiac. Just be careful, and try not to make anything more cliche than that.

    > Obviously there's no scale, so it's a bit hard to gauge distance, but I don't think you'd ever have lush, green vegetation only a bit south of a snow-covered region.
    >
    > Although.. Thinking about it… I suppose, if the area is large enough, you could be looking at say Russia in the Northern section then Asia in the Southern area..
    >
    > TL;DR - Needs a scale. ![:P](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png)

It's not large, and there is no lush vegetation. The climate is congruous to europe, in the south(the peninsulas on either side) there is desert, in the big valley just east of the western peninsula there is some wooded areas and prairies, and in the north there is pine forest/snow. Does it really look that lush?

As for the mountains in the snow, if you look in the northwest there are some. In the north east there are some smaller ones, as well. If you zoom in you can see them. Mountains are probably the feature I've struggled most with, in the tutorial I used the poster just said 'use a low opacity brush to make mountains' and when I did it they looked pretty shitty. I ended up using a 'splatter' type of brush at ~3 opacity and building it up, but it still didn't look as tall as his. I might have another go at it if you guys think it looks shitty.
  12. > Never try to save money on decent equipment!
    >
    > It might sound silly, but if you can try calling in a few favors or borrow some money you know you can slowly pay back.. Do it. Trust me, you'll want a decent sized tablet if you're going to use it often.

the same goes for everything in life. Clothes, knives, cooking utensils…. splerging for the durability is always worth it. /offtopic

A tablet sounds really useful, especially if you're into graphics. I might get one if there's crazy black friday sales or something.
  13. > If you truly are aiming for "retro", I would suggest studying retro game colour palettes. As it stands, the line-art and zoom says retro, but the colours say modern.

Well, I'm not looking for NES era retro by any means. My main inspirations are [Final fantasy tactics](http://www.moogle.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/final-fantasy-tactics-the-war-of-the-lions-20070708081504429-000.jpg) and [dungeon dashers](http://www.dungeondashers.com/). They have full, modern palettes and antialiasing/modern pixel art techniques, and then they resize it. I love that style, and hope to replicate it.

Basically, I don't care about the retro factor. I just want it to look good.

Made it kind of dark, changed the trees' foliage a bit, added shrubs….. the main thing that needs work now is the tree trunks. I also might try and fix up the grass>dirt transition a bit more. The dirt palette also might be edited slightly. Thoughts?
  15. > i want it :/ make me a map like that!!! i need a new desktop background ![:)](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png)

haha, thanks. You could make this your desktop background if you want, but I really don't think it looks _that_ good. Also it's a .jpg so the quality isn't great.

    > Yeah a bit. Looks nice.

    > I like it! It looks and feels like a map. ![:P](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png)

    thanks
  16. Hello eclipse, I've spent basically all my free time today making a world map for a game I'm working on. I'm pretty happy with how it looks right now, but I still need to add towns and labels and shit. Without further ado, here it is:

Click on it and view closer for better results. Ignore the bevel in the top left area, I'll fix it momentarily.
