**[Blog](http://jungletoe.com) - [Twitter](http://twitter.com/coloniesgame) - [Reddit](http://reddit.com/r/coloniesgame)**

**What is Colonies?**

A cross between creativity, horror, and adventure, Colonies aims to be an ORPG like no other. Settle, create a village, and defend your friends from the horrible creatures who lurk in the forests. You can change the landscape, farm, or hunt in order to survive the conditions– it's all up to you!

**How can I play**?

Colonies is currently in its closed Alpha 1.0 stage. This means that occasional testing sessions will be run, although briefly and at the programmers' will. If you'd like to participate, follow our Twitter page @ColoniesGame. We'll post updates as well as download links ![:)](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png)

**What features are planned?**

-An ever-changing world shaped purely by the players

-Villages created and governed by the players themselves

-Basic jobs, like farming, mining, fishing, woodworking, cloth working, and cooking

-Advanced building, allowing you to make a personalized home for your needs and profession

-A simplified stats system, reducing grind and improving players' experiences

-Skill-based combat (no more button bashing or complex combat systems!)

-Diplomacy amongst villages and villagers

-Children and Family (spawned based on your stats and living conditions)

-Pets and farm animals

**What platforms will Colonies be available on?**

At the moment, Colonies is only available on Windows (XP and up). After our testing phases, we aim to have a solid build out for everyone to enjoy, including those on MacOS and Linux. Please be patient– we want you to be able to play just as much as you do!

**How are you making Colonies?**

I'm using C++ and SFML. I made the engine entirely on my own. I also use the pugiXML and libnoise libraries for extra help within XML loading and world generation.

> So looking forward to this. Keep up the good work!

Thanks man. I'm really excited about it. I've been planning it forever, and seeing it come to life is pretty awesome.

> Look really neat. I would love to play this if it is release

Thanks ![:)](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png)

> One question, are new players assigned a map to build on or do they find a map and edit it at will, with the restrictions you have set of course?

New players are currently spawned randomly around the map and are allowed to use resources anywhere. You can build wherever you want, but it's to your advantage to build inside a village due to combat defense advantages.

In the future, you'll be able to spawn as a child of another player. This will allow other players to meet up with others.

> I've been following this since you first mentioned it over at the Jungle Report. As soon as a playable version is released, I'll grab it.

Thanks! ![:)](http://www.touchofdeathforums.com/community/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png)

> Do you have actual lighting as of yet, and if so, is it pixel or tile based?

Shaders don't work properly with Intel chipsets and SFML, so it's just a primitive alpha filter at the moment. I may try to work on a fix, but I put that on my "do if you're really effing bored" list.

> I like it, I'm really interested in the way you are to go about "politics".

Politics are handled by the players, but have in-game mechanisms to help out. One of my inspirations for this game was Civilization IV, so I wanted to include some sort of political aspect within war and communications.

Within your village, you can have villagers, a warlord, and a chief. The chief is set up so he can easily handle all political options like village meetings, village memberships, and village teleportation (allows for inter-village trading). The warlord has similar permissions, but is encouraged to handle all diplomacy. Villagers are only allowed to use the village perks, like teleportation and combat defense bonuses.

My goal is for players to develop different governing styles and systems. Some may choose tribal communism, while others may desire a capitalistic dictatorship. Everything is down to the players.
