How to Use the Search

Hey all!

Apparently, it's really difficult to use the search bar, and as such there are 101 new topics asking about the same thing over and over again, or people asking constantly in the shoutbox.

Here I present to you a simple, graphical tutorial on how to use the search box. Right, let's get on. Make sure you're sat comfortably, this is some complicated tech stuff going on here.

**Step 1**: **Type in the search bar at the top right**.

Top marks to those of you who saw it in the first screenshot, but don't worry if you didn't, it's quite a sneaky thing and can be difficult to spot in the fading LCD light. I've now highlighted the search box in magenta in the below screenshot:

**Step 2: Searching**

Now, for most of you this should be the final step.

All you do is _**type a phrase or word which is relevant to your question and browse through the results**_ until you come across a potential answer.

**Step 3: Example**

Let's say you're encountering "_Runtime Error 5_" when you try to play your game. It's a bit scary, I know, but don't worry, I'm here to help and guide you through this traumatic experience.

Firstly, we'll go to our now-familiar search box (_refer to steps 1-2 if you need help with this_). Once we're at the search box, we simply **type a phrase relevant to the question or issue**.

For this exercise, I'm going to search "_runtime error 5_":


_Note: Don't worry about the red squiggle, it's fine._

**I think it's worth pointing out that typing "_help!1!!!!111_" into the search box won't help. You need to be more specific about the problem you're having.**

Now, just **click that little black magnifying glass icon** to initiate the search. Once that has done, you'll be shown a scary-looking page of results, as below:


Again, **don't worry, I'm here to help you through this**. Don't be put off by the complexity here, it's not as bad as it looks.

One of the great features in Eclipse is the post 'tags' as you can see, some have a red "unresolved" tag by them; we probably want to ignore these as the problem isn't resolved.

What we're looking for, as a rule of thumb, is the green "resolved" tags.

The first one we can see is titled "_got a link?_", which doesn't say much about the post content. I know that this topic might not be particularly useful for our search, but feel free to have a look if you want to make sure. Once you've done that, press "back" on your browser to return to the search results.

If we **scroll down a bit**, we'll soon come to a post titled "_run time error 5_", which is also marked as solved! This looks promising:


Let's go ahead and **click on that topic to view it**:


And look, someone is having the same (or similar) error as us! This is good.

Now, as we can see, DrSean has very kindly given 4 links (blue underlined text) with possible solutions. All you need to do now is **follow the instructions in those links** to try and find a solution to your problem!

Now, remember, **you might not find the answer you're looking for straight away**. You'll have to use your intuition and a bit of perseverance. With time, you'll soon come to master the search and be able to find almost any answer without pestering people in the shoutbox and making a new topic search time!
