ER GUI Input

So far it's coming along nicely, but I've hit a few road blocks I need some suggestions for:

1) How should I have the buttons on the screen?
….-> Have a button that shows/hides the buttons in the corner
....-> Have them in the corner
....-> Have them along the bottom
....-> A different idea I haven't thought of

2) Icon ideas for the Character and Quest buttons. I do have some ideas, but I don't think they're that great so what do you guys think would be good icons?
