Okay. Well to start this off…

I'm going to use a grading system.
![](http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1831/gradesheet.png)

Closer the grade is to 150, the better your piece is.

Pretty self explanatory.

To get it started.. We can start with something fairly easy.. I'd like to see detail on it.. so lets try.

Subject - Sword.
Canvas Size - 64 x 64.
Colours - Unrestricted.
Background - White
Animation - No.

28 - I can tell its a sword. the thing is, what type of sword, I'm guessing its a broad sword from the thickness of theblade in relation to the handle. only 28 points because its flattened.. doesnt show any depth on the item. Next time make it skew'd a bit. as if its laying on the ground.

23 - Reason for this. Yes, you have less then 15 colors and all.. but I guess I said it wrongly.. More colors isn't bad.. it just has limits. you have 4 colors which isnt at ALL enough to shade 3 different tones. No noticeable hue shifting. Try with around 7 colors. 2dark,3mid,2highlight.

26 - Lightsource wasnt really pointed out since there isnt any highlights to show it. The dithering isnt bad. but on a sword (a Generaly smoother object, your not going to have a pattern like that). Its hard to shade with so few colors. So wasnt much to grade upon.

Total - 77/150
Edit with this advice in mind, then repost. After I see your change I'll have a go at your first version, and show how I would of changed. So you can compare.

The Shadow? on it makes it look odd. and distorts the shape.

The main thing i changed to show you is your color choice. You have gray-scale which is kinda boring. In mine, I used purple's and blues.. and was able to blend them together getting a silvery grey look. (this is hue shifting, started with a dark purple to say a light blue.. or like a light green. Also.. the darkest color is also used as the darker color for the brown handle, because of the tone of its color it allows it to fit in with the brown and red grip.
Main thing i'm trying to show with this edit isn't entirely texture, but more of color choice. while dealing with a metal object, color also comes into play while working with that texture. metal uses cooler color, with a fairly strong contrast, while say a rubber does not have much contrast cause light doesn't entirely reflect off it as well.

DD, I'll critique yours tomorrow. I'm sleepy. Well.. I'm actually about to just watch through the .hack//sign series.

Okay.. Well this is what I have to say.

36 - Yes it's noticeably a mallet, though.. for it to be realistic the shaft would have to be like 4 times as long.
26 - Grey scale. And there isnt as much contrast needed to give it any type of shape.
25 - Dithering is okay for a stone texture. but not when the colors are so similar, also.. to give it shape to much dithering can be bad, and just blend it all together. Normally with stone it should look natural and unfinished, so try and put in some indents, or small fractures.

87/150

Figure: 8
It looks like a badly made axe. Mallets are most often wooden, because their size would make them a tad too heavy and therefore hard to handle if they were metal, by the way. Hammers are smaller than mallets, therefore can support the metal. Yes, there are metal mallets, but if what you made is meant to be a metal mallet, i'd say it looks more like a hammer. A badly proportioned one.

Color: 7
Bland. I don't like it. It would look moreso like a hammer if t'were black, maybe.

Shading: 9
Does that thing have edges? The shading suggest the shape of an axe, where it wedges near the nose of the head. If you were shading for an axe, this'd be near-awesome.

Overall? Call it an axe to avoid embaressment.
