    Eclipse 4.0 [Source]

Hmm, Aeirex, I must ask: Will you be planning on creating a sort of character creation system similar to EO4 for Eclipse Worlds? I'm unaware if Eclipse Worlds already has something of the sort, but when I dipped my toes in the the water I didn't see anything of the sort. I'm asking simply because that was one of the biggest drives for me to use EO4\. I was curious to know if you were planning on creating a similar (albeit probably cleaner) form of that system. I apologize if you've been asked this already. I didn't see anywhere you had been asked that.

    Public Apology.

The problem with a system like that is that it removes all incentive for people to provide help. It further divides the casual community from the hardcore community. No one here will deny, as the discussion earlier brought up, that some people on this site have a very… er... 'elitist' attitude. I can tell you for a fact I've had times where I've been bashed for being a novice at coding when I've asked for help. It's no secret that there are people around here who have the mentality of **"If you can't code get out."** The problem lies with the fact that no one will want competition. If these people can train others to make their own scripts, or keep people dumb and dependent on their release of scripts, which do you think they'll take? Of course, honest people won't do this, but let's face it: human nature will drive people to further pad their wallets. **You can't count on everyone here being honest.** In fact, isn't competition like this one reason the community is being further torn apart? Can't you look at the 3rd party engines and see all the hate, strife, and conflict stirred up because people can't handle competition? Because they want to be number one and others don't matter? You all know the flame wars that have started over just simple engines, let alone with money on the line it'd be a disaster. And let's not forget the idea of someone not willing to pay for a script, replicating it very similarly, and then causing a huge ruckus over the 'stolen' script. It's a system begging for trolls, exploiters, and so much more. But the main point is this: **Most people won't have any incentive to help others.** We want a community driven to help each other to success, but when people are blinded by the possible monatization of their work how can they be willing to help others? Why would the _average person_ want to help someone starting off when this average person already has it made. They don't need to help others, they're just there to make money off something that comes so easy to them. Where's the community bonding? **Of course, as I said, this isn't everybody**. A lot of you guys here right now are honest and willing to help. However if we're to look at Eclipse growing back to the size it once was, things like this need to be taken accounted for. We can't blindly assume that people will be willing to help out of the goodness of their heart. Not everyone is a Nikola Tesla.

I believe Mad Hatter has the right idea when it comes to funding Eclipse. I had heard a similar suggestion thrown around before, but it was more-so along the lines of Unity's asset store, which in that sense I could see it further dividing the community (If people were to make money off their scripts, why would anyone help or post anything for free?). But to have officially released scripts, I believe that would be much more efficient.

    > i've been here since 2009 just didnt register. Got you beat. xD No but really it'd be nice to see a revival of Eclipse. To be honest I don't think the community fully left, in fact an update to EO4 with an announcement email or something would probably pull back a ton of people who left. I know it would for me if I was one of those people. Then there's the guys _like_ me who have just kinda been lurking for the past few months, and just didn't feel the need to post besides the occasional question and bug report. To be honest I never really considered this community 'dead'. There's always some people here, posting or not.
  5. > get someone to code the stuff for you :P I don't have that kind of money, nor is this project _that_ important to me. xD
  6. > I have yet to test if it works; however, try checking the "Global Box" for the door event. Oh, I tried this but it didn't seem to want to work before… xD Now it does, though. Was a bit more creative with it. Set it to "global", made the requirements that "Self-Switch A" is "false", then made it so when a player interacts it turns self-switch "A" on. And there we go! The event disappears for everyone. Thanks a ton! Glad to know this is possible. > personally i think you should just go open source anyways.. It can be accomplished pretty easy if you just go open source I've been thinking heavily about just switching back to EO3 or something, but the problem is that I really love a lot of the features EO4 has to offer. I'm not very good at coding, so although I know I could do certain minor things eventually, things like the character creator and instancing and such are lost to me. I'd love to learn VB6 better someday, but I always seem to have trouble trying. xP VB6's editor is just so clunky and buggy and it really messes me up.
  7. Hello, everyone! So I'm trying to create a dungeon for my game. I had an idea of the players in the party trying to get 3 keys in order to open a door to the next part of the dungeon. When one player (with all 3 keys) would interact with an event, it would open up access to the next area. The problem is, I can't figure out how I would go about doing this. I saw a similar question come up before, and people were saying try changing it to a self-switch event. However self-switch is still per-player. It doesn't change on the other players' screens until they interact with it (meaning in my case, if players were to do this each player would need 3 keys in order to activate the event each time to open the door). Am I missing something? I was really hoping I could get something like this to work, so I could have other puzzles and such using similar techniques. In general I think there need to be more party-based event commands in EO4\. Stuff like "# of players in party" and "is party leader" checks, "Warp party", and other stuff like that. Would be nice if EO4 were open source so I could attempt this stuff myself, but… ...well, you know. >_<

    Blurry tileset

Oh! Oh oh! I got this one! Pick me! : D I actually had this same problem. [http://www.eclipseorigins.com/community/index.php?/topic/134490-older-tileset-looks-weird-on-other-computers-but-not-the-main-one/#entry910768](http://www.eclipseorigins.com/community/index.php?/topic/134490-older-tileset-looks-weird-on-other-computers-but-not-the-main-one/#entry910768) The dimensions of the tileset need to be powers of 2\. So instead of the tileset being 256x29000, try adding extra blank space to the bottom so the tileset's size is 256x32768. There are websites that actually list the powers of 2, which you can use in the future if this problem happens again. :)

    The Future of EO4?

Alright well I think that answers all my questions. Thanks, guys! :)

    The Future of EO4?

Thanks for the reply, Stein! Wow, didn't know VB6 could be that broken… xP. Thanks for the clarification! Still a little disappointed by the lack of converters, but I understand. Oh, while I'm here, and since this deals with EO4 (and potential additions) and I don't want to make a new topic about it, was there a specific reason lighting was taken out of Eclipse awhile ago? I remember back in... I think Eclipse Evolution still had it... we had lighting effects along with day/night cycles. It wasn't too advanced, but it was still nice to play with and could create some nice looking map effects. For some reason I seem to recall someone saying it was taken out because it was too demanding on certain games? Not sure if this is true or not, since it'd be impossible to find the original post. From a bit of quick research it appears some players were able to script it back into EO3\. I was wondering if maybe there are plans to add it back into EO4? I do understand we have the color overlays that can work as a make-shift night filter, but we have nothing to brighten up specific areas with. If I have a street lamp it will always look like it's off during night. So I guess really two questions: 1\. Anyone know why it was removed originally? 2\. Are there any plans to add it back in, and if not would someone be able to suggest it for me (Or point me in the direction to suggest it)? Not really sure if there's an "insert ideas here" topic or anything xP. Thanks ahead of time.

    The Future of EO4?

Hmm… I see. Thank you for the reply! Now that you mention it I do recall a conversation about security problems with scripting, although I never did see if there were plans to re-implement it in a more secure way. I'm hoping you're right. Although strangely, and this might just be my memory failing me, I don't really recall issues with security issues during the era of Eclipse Evolution. Like I said, though, it's probably just my memory failing me. I am disappointed by the lack of conversion possibilities. You're right in saying that I'm getting in practice now, but it's just disheartening to know that all my work right now won't even be valid if Eclipse V comes out. I would just stop and wait, but considering there's no ETA as to when Eclipse V will come out I might be waiting a long while. Anyway, thanks. I'll just set this topic to resolved. If anyone else has any input or could better answer anything I'm all ears.

    The Future of EO4?

Alright just a heads up: This is _NOT_ one of those "IS EO4 DEAD?!?!" topics. I do have some questions on the future of it though. First off I'd like to ask: Will EO4 be getting some sort of beta to the scripting system offered in the upcoming EclipseV by the end of its lifetime? Sort of how Cryptic Studios revealed the Foundry to STO players when it was designed for NWO? Reason I ask is because my fear began to ring true last night while I was working on my EO4 game, and that was that EO4 could have been a lot better with a solid scripting system in place. I understand why EO4 couldn't have been open source, due to selling the product, but I feel like for the price it was to buy EO4 it should have more customization. There are HUGE improvements to it, yes. I was VERY surprised when instancing became a thing. However, I still feel like production speed could have been heavily increased and focus would have been more driven towards Eclipse V if the players were able to customize the engine themselves. If this wasn't a plan already (to add scripting support to EO4), would it be possible to consider it now? I understand this is a huge feat, and it would take quite a bit of time, but I honestly feel like unless EO4 gold owners will get a discount on Eclipse V, my money has been sort of wasted. With the ability to customize previous Eclipse engines so heavily, and for free, it seems sort of a step backwards to charge for EO4 and have less customization (and then to ask for full payment for Eclipse V from EO4 Gold owners). Second, and this sort of follows up my previous question, if EO4 will NOT be getting scripting support (which is the more likely case), how difficult will the transition from EO4 to Eclipse V be? Will there be any account, character, or map converters? Obviously graphics can easily be transferred, but how about stuff like player progress and the maps I've been working on? I really love making games with Eclipse, and I've made significant progress with the EO4 game I'm working on, but I'd really love that scripting system and would _LOVE_ to be able to simply convert my stuff over to Eclipse V with ease. I'd really hate to start from scratch. Thanks in advance!
  13. Hello everyone, I've been working on a game after buying Gold awhile ago and letting it collect virtual dust on my hard drive. So I decide to create an item, a potion to be exact, that will heal 500 HP to the user (for a laterish-game player). So naturally I change the type to consumable, and I go to set the "Add HP" amount… Though to my surprise, it maxed out at "255". I remember this issue in previous Eclipse Origins, and obviously before it could simply be fixed by opening VB and messing with some values and stuff. Sadly, due to the closed-source of EO4, I'm unable to fix it the same way as before. So anyway, this topic can kinda double as a bug report, and a question. **My question:** Is there a way around this, or will I have to wait until this is fixed? Oh also I tried searching for other topics with this issue, and I was unable to find anything so please don't flame me if there's already a topic about this. Thanks in advance!
  14. Haha, I actually figured it was pretty simple to do after I thought about it. I wasn't sure if the Event system supported timers though. But anyway I think what I really mean when it comes down to it is games will lack a special designer flare… they wont have something unique that the developer of the game thought up of, but I mean as said before: There's not much that could be done without risking the security of the payment system. Someone could easily pirate Eclipse Gold if the source were able to be edited. So I mean I don't want you guys to get me wrong: I'm not bashing the system at all. In fact I'm glad Eclipse has made it this far in development, coming from a time when things were pretty limited. It's nice to see things like: Character creators, character selectors, built in quest systems... I mean really the entire topic was built around asking a simple question of will I be disappointed if Eclipse 5.0 ends up coming out with a gold edition as well. But that has pretty much been answered. In reality, this topic should probably be closed due to everything technically being solved. I was just wondering if anyone else was going to respond to the initial topic. Thanks guys. :) Off topic edit: Lol oh look, after being a member since 2007 I finally reached my 200th post... xD
  15. Thanks for the responses. I plan to eventually buy Eclipse Gold when I get the money (which sadly is not right now). It just seemed to me that the details on future addons to Gold were a little vague as in "Well we're hoping to deliver all this eventually but… we'll see." It's nice to hear that people are very passionate about the project and I wish them the best. One thing that has concerned me about the new edition of Eclipse, and this is just feedback at this point, is how there's no way of accessing the source (even if you're Gold, from my understanding). I understand that this is to make things easier for people to get all these cool features (E.g. guilds, etc) without needing to be experts in VB or some scripting language to add them on, and it's also for some security issues when it comes to payments, but this limits the creativity of the users to what the engine currently supports and what those working on it are able to do at this time. See if I wanted to somehow add some kind of... I dunno', some kind of way to simulate pirate ships by instancing maps as a players' pirate ship and having them be required to wait a specific amount of time depending on the length of the destination -- I'd have to suggest ways to make this work, which would most likely get put at the bottom of the suggestion list, and hope and pray what I suggest gets added in. That last bit is just my own little feedback and concerns, so it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but anyway. Thanks again for the responses, and thanks for the engine. I _am_ truely excited for the advancements Eclipse has taken recently, and am eager to see what you guys come up with to expand on it. :)
